I have a 75 Trans Am front clip. Will the steering box work on my 83 wagon and what issues will I have. IE hoses, stops? Can anybody tell me the spec on this box? Which pitman arm should be used?
Thanks

Anyone?

First of all, does your steering box need to be replaced, or are you hoping the Firebird box has a quicker ratio? Did the setup come from a performance model Firebird? The reason I ask is because it may have a standard ratio box.
I would first look at both boxes side by side and see how the mounting bolts are configured. Is it a 3-bolt or 4-bolt mounting?
I'm thinking a '75 model steering box should probably work in a G-body car.
You'll have to do your own research. You already have the box. You'll have to do your own detective work.
I personally don't have any information to provide, sorry.

I see that you did mention it's a TA..sorry. It probably does have the quicker ratio, but you'll see have to compare the mounting configuration....and I'm not sure if the pitman arm will work on your wagon.

Quickly checking manufacturer part numbers for both a 75 TA and a G-body, it doesn't seem like they use the same box. I suppose this doesn't necessarily mean it wont work, however.

I would think about what Longroof suggested.

Something else that comes to mind is that there was a change in the pressure hose fittings IIRC. I believe the change over was going from flared fittings, to an o-ring set up when everything started going metric. I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of swapping the fittings from one box & pump over to the other. It's been years since I've done it, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Probably doesn't help with your question, but just one more surprise you'll expect if the box fits.

You're absolutely correct on the change of fittings. The earlier boxes pre '80 I believe used the flared fittings, where as post '80 used the O-ring type fittings.
I think the earlier box can be converted to the O-ring style. The earlier boxes had a brass insert that helped seat the flared fittings. If I'm not mistaken, these brass inserts can be removed. I'm going by memory here. I think it's been at least 10 yrs + that I swapped out mine for the later Monte SS box.

If the 75 TA box is anything like the Monte Carlo SS or 80's Camaro box the 83 pitman arm off the Malibu will not fit the fast ratio box. I found out this the hard way. I ordered a Monte Carlo SS box from the parts store and found the 83 Malibu pitman arm to be to small of a diameter to spline onto the Monte Carlo box. Had to go to the wreckers and find a suitable pitman arm. Seems like the Iroc Camaro share the same pitman arm as the Monte Carlo SS.

I'm kinda wondering why as well, is yours shot or are you looking for a better ratio??
