hey

the wiper motor on my 85 cutlass supreme just started to skip over and grind.

This leads me to believe that the plastic gears inside are stripped out. Anyways i purchased a used one at a local parts store and decided id install it last night.

Before removing my old one, when the wipers were turned on, it would make a grinding noise. However, after removing it and trying the new one on the plug, there was nothing.

I then plugged back in the old one, and nothing. WTF. I am hoping that this is a power problem now, and not that i bought a faulty wiper motor. There is warranty on the part, but i want to be sure that its broken before i return it.

Is there a way to bench test these wiper motors? also what would likely cause me to lose power to the wiper motor plugs just by removing the old motor. Maybe a loose wire???? Any help is appreciated

Cheers

Yeah, one of the bolt holes has a brass contact on it that is the ground for the wiper motor. It needs to be installed to function.

thanks

thanks guys

glad this is somthing so simple. I can't believe i didn't think of this. I'll try it tonight. CHeers🙂

washer pump

before installing the new wiper motor, and before the old one gave out, i noticed that the washer pump was not working.

After installing the new wiper motor and getting it working successfully, i noticed the washer pump still does not work. I took apart all of the hoses and blew them out to make sure there were no blockages.

I'm hoping this is just a fuse or somthing. Anyone know if the wiper and washer motor are on the same fuse, and if not what this problem might be.

If the wiper motor was old enough to have failed, I will bet the diaphram in the washer pump has failed also. Get a new one.

i was under the impression that the washer pump is built on to the new wiper motor? and i have just purchased the new wiper motor and have it installed.

is there a seperate washer pump on the vehicle? i don't see one.

thanks

It should be on the bottom, and is held in by a metal clip. I believe it is part of the black plastic front cover assembly. I can take a pic of one ( I have 3 or 4 floating around) if you need to see it.

Exactly right. The diaphragm fails after a while and needs a new one. It is a pretty easy fix. You can even do it without removing the wiper motor. Either way can be somewhat annoying. It is tight if you leave it in, the bottom bolt can be a pain to get in place and not cross thread (not a huge issue if you do).

Thanks for reminding me. When I head to the parts store, I need to look for bushing for my arms so they will come down properly and not have so much play.

Wiring For The Wipers and Washer Motor

The wipers and the washer pump are both connected to the same fuse located in the fuse block just to the left of the brake pedal. It is a 25 Amp fuse and should be labeled Wiper.

If you have further wiring questions I have a complete wiring schematics for all B-Body and G-Body vehicles from 1987.
