I hope he never damages a wheel stud, it's an all wheel drive car so I guess we'd have to change the drive train....I gave that example to BMW
BMW already thought of that, remember they use wheel bolts and not studs n lugs

and I thought of that after I posted but then I can always call them exterior studs...

For those of you who don't get the 710 joke write it on a piece of paper then rotate the paper 180deg. The rest I am guessing in some parts is the same as saying "you could of heard a pin drop".

I think that broken piece is probably just a dust cover for the seal. Can you just make something to keep the road grime out?

That's what the part is, if it was my car it'd be my problem but it's my son's car and he tries to keep it in original condition so I want to get a new part for it. That lower steering shaft is a know problem with his car so I suspect that this hard plastic piece has been damaged by the BMW mechanics at least a couple of times when the steering shaft is replaced. I highly doubt they put in a $1,200 new rack in a customers car if they happen to damage it

I would suspect that most BMW owners would never know if a tech damaged it. I can understand why you'd want it right on your son's car though. But really, it's more about function than form. If it isn't visible from the driver's seat, would your son be okay with a homemade cover as long as it did the job and looked professional? I'm not talking about poking a hole in a Starbucks lid and attaching it with Silly Putty.

Your right about owners never being aware if it was missing. The piece I broke off can be epoxied back on but I would still like to replace it. My son knows a few technicians at BMW dealers so that part should turn up. Situations like frustrates me cause that part ought to available. It slides on the input shaft and it's a piece of plastic and it's foreseeable that part could be damaged so to only sell a part worth a few $$$ with an expensive rack makes no sense. The only thing I can think of it's not needed so no one replaces it. I have never seen rack with a dust cover for the seal
