I got a sbo and looking for a carb for it. anyhow my ? is Will any edelbrock or Holley carbs work or are there ones that only work on a olds?..

if its a stock manifold a rochester will bolt up with no other additonal parts like a carb spacer.Using an aftermarket intake like holley or edelbrock will be a little different. They are designed for square bore carbs like edelbrocks and holleys, rather than spread bore like a rochester q jet.If using an edelbrock or holley carb on a stock manifold, get a carb spacer for it to fit.If you have an aftermarket intake and using a qjet, get a carb spacer

Its a got a holley street dominator intake....wouldnt be easier to put holley or edelbrock on then?

Don't holley and edelbrock make spread bore carbs? I was pretty sure they did.

Really what my question is are edelbrock and holley carbs universal like if it came off a chevy will it go on a olds.

yes,they are universal.

Holley and carter made a spread bore carb.Holley had a knock off version of the qjet, deeming it the "replacement" qjet.I dont see the difference between them.Carter had the thermoquad, had no experience with these but i heard the term "thermo-crap" being tossed around a lot.

I say go with a holley,i have one on my olds 350 and it runs like a champ.

The idea you need to keep in mind here is squarebore or spreadbore. A stock quadrajet has a spreadbore design while holley and edelbrock use a square bore design. All carbs are universal. You can take a spreadbore carter thermoquad carb off a mopar and put it on a ford or chevy as long as the chevy or ford is using a spreadbore intake. Same goes for edelbrock and holley. As long as each car you swap the carb to uses a square bore intake, then it will fit with no problems.

Nothing wrong with thermoquads. The same term quadrajunk gets thrown around a lot more for the quadrajet carbs yet you get guys defending those things too.

any suggestions on a specific holley?

Depends on the motor setup. I personally have heard too many things about holley's being a pain in the *ss. If I was to suggest any holley, if it is a regular stock motor and even a mild sbc, a 600 holley with vacuum secondaries is exactly what you need. I would say edelbrock 1406 carb which is also 600cfm with an electric choke would be more for what your looking for. A 750cfm is really too much for a small block in most cases and really should be utilized on big blocks. Stay away from double pump holley carbs unless your doing nothing but racing, if not your car will piss through gas like a frat boy drinking beer during happy hour.

yes, pats right,i have a 750 double pumper holley on my 355 olds, likes that 93 octane/110 super unleaded mix.If its a stock olds than go for a 600,if its built up like mine,go for a 750 but nothing above that.
