Any ideas on how to remove the lock from the rear tailgate. I am afraid to just drill it out from the outside as I do not know what it looks like inside the tailgate. I am afraid I will damage something that is difficult to replace. I see replacement cylinders on line with keys for reasonable prices once I can get the gate open and get the interior panel off. I do not see any easy way to remove the interior panel from the inside while the gate is closed. If I had a schematic of the inside of tailgate and the mechanism it would help, any one got one to spare.

Is the key all the way in? If so then the tumblers are lined up still. Can you take a thin screwdriver and slip it in with the key to turn the lock?

Well the key was broken off far far inside the tumbler to be coaxed back out with picks, witch I already had. So I became brave and attacked the tumbler with my drill. I can now open the window but the the tailgate remains a puzzle. I pried back the inside door panel a little and can see the latch and can see that there is a wire to the sides of the tailgate which must activate a latch. But I am not ready to pry off the interior panel and damage it just as yet. I do see there must be some sort of handle attached to the outside of locking mechanism to activate the two latches on the sides of the tailgate. I think that is what was missing on this car and was the reason the key broke off. There is one on Amazon Prime that clams to be the correct handle and tumbler for the Malibu I will order it and give it a try. Wish me luck.

If the lock opens the window now it only has to turn a bit more to open the tailgate.

The lock feature only applies to the direction of the lift glass. (CCW)
Once the glass is unlatched, turning the knob the opposite direction (CW) opens the gate whether there is a key in it or not...

Any luck getting the key out? Or getting the entire cylinder out from the gate?
