What are the differences in the fuel tanks from model to model and year to year? Basically, are they all dimensionally the same/interchangeable?

I am aware that the FI tanks are setup for different sending unit/pump assembly. But I'm in need of a tank and I intend to install a sump - and less is more , less $ that is :)

wagons and el camino's are different but as far as I know all the 4 door and 2 door models from 78 to 87 used the same tank.

With coupes/sedans it'll be the filler neck difference by certain model other than the FI tanks which would have the same filler neck as a carb tank for that particular model. I'm not sure what all models share the same filler neck or how many different ones used.

So ive seen conflicting information on this, on this site. I read that a regal tank would not work on a monte carlo. I have a fuel injection tank from a turbo regal in my 81 monte carlo. I do not know what to tell you 🤷‍♂️

Easiest way to research this is either car-part.com, or rockauto by looking up the variants and seeing what used what tank

The filler neck difference was the concern. Conveniently I have had two with holes. I'm trying not to bite the bullet and buy new, but I can see it coming lol.

Such as an Aeroback fuel tank...??? I am under the impression the filler is different on the Aeroback cars. I have a 4 door tank, and the Aero tank, but have been too lazy to compare them.

From personal experience I tried putting a tank from a 79 Monte into my 81 Monte and the filler neck hit the trunk floor where it met the tail panel and the licence plate would not fit properly.

I have a TBI Monte tank in my 85 4 door. The only issue I've seen is the tag bracket being pushed out a little- easy fix.
I'm pretty sure the senders are the same fitment with the difference being the pump provision.
