I'm considering the purchase of a 66 olds 425 engine. This engine has the B heads and steel crank. That are asking 200 bucks for what is in the pics.

I've read these are good engines but I have never owned one. Let me know your thought on if this would be a good engine.

My intention would be for street driving, no strip or racing.

I don't remember which one is the one to get, but the cam bank angle and lifter bore are different depending on what year and what it came out of. That may help you decide on this endeavor.
 
425s are pretty widely regarded as good engines. There were several versions so you can run into compatibility issues when mixing and matching parts. 2bbl intake would indicate the 310hp version of the Super Rocket. That one is early and has a 45* lifter bank angle and small diameter lifters. Not a bad thing, just limits aftermarket cam choices a bit.
I always viewed the 425 is to the 455 what the 427 is to the 454. You give up a little torque but gain a little in horsepower. Supposedly 425s like to rev a little quicker. I'll find out eventually.

I'd probably feel safe giving $200 for it.
 
It's going in a 1980 cutlass supreme. I have not asked the seller if there are more pieces that come along with it. Anything I need to pay special attn to when i go to check this engine out?

I would definitely ask about that. Anyone know if our G-Body pulleys and brackets will mount to this engine? Or maybe a bolt-on serp system from a yard I could grab?
 
Just talked to the guy selling the engine. Engine is complete from oil pan to intake. All bolts and all. He said the heads looked good and the cylinder walls look good.

He mentioned that when he tore down the engine, one of the pistons had a crack, so he replaced that piston and the opposing piston. He also replaced the connecting rods on those two pistons.

He has the harmonic balancer, but he does not have the flexplate. He said I could use one from a 330 but it would need redrilled.

Knowing all this, is it still worth it?
