Hello guys,

I have question to g-body monte carlo gurus about special models with higher output engines than the normal ones you could buy from the dealer. I mean something like police vehicles or cars sold only in mexico. I know that from el camino and malibu there have been cars like that available with pretty good power numbers. Been trying to do little research without any solid answers from the internet.

I need this info so i can legally register the car i bought from Cali to my home country. In Finland, Europe we have this pretty messed up law that power output after engine swap can only raise 20% from the highest output engine that was available to car.

My 83 SS has LS1 under it's hood so i'm just hoping that there is some kind of 200kw special model sold somewhere, no matter where so i can get plates to my monte. If someone have any documentation/paperwork about something like this about 1978-1988 monte carlo i'm very interested of it.

If the car would be stock v6 buick regal, i could just use GNX as " compare model " for "DMV officials" (we have our own system) here and then i would have 206kW + 20% = 247kW engine possibility.

Damn i wish i would just live where i bought the damn car, Golden State baby...

Unfortunately, even the monte SS only ever had 180hp at its best. The 305 cubic inch Chevrolet 5.0 v8. The real power came from the turbo v6. There was a turbo v6 offered in 1981 monte carlos. And from 78-80 as well. Kind of rare but they do exist. 4 barrels were 175hp. 2 barrels were 150hp.

Heres a hemmings article detailing it. Not much to say other than it was a monte with the turbo.

To the best of my knowledge, the H.O. 305 in the Monte SS was the most powerful engine that came from the factory in those cars from '78-'88, at 180HP. Even the Mexican Monte SS, with the 350, probably wasn't more than about 200HP (as far as I know-if anyone here knows better, please chime in). There were some police Malibus built, but once again, as far as I know, no police Monte Carlos, and no other factory models, with special high performance engines. How does kW compare to HP?

1kw is 1.34hp.
100kw = 134hp, etc. 200kw would be 268hp. Tbh even though it has an LS1 already, you would be better off undoing that and swapping in a 305 and building it to that 268hp mark. Is that flywheel or wheel kw? Does the law specify? If ita wheel power you can have the 350hp ls but swap gears and put A really loose converter in it lol.

The system is pretty dumb i can tell you that. After passing the inspection system with engine X here, it's possible to take loads of more power of it with all the new parts like camkits, heads even intake if it looks similar to stock one.

Here you just kinda have to prove that it's safe to install the engine in to your car and there have been similar power cars from factory available. No matter if it would be some kind of special model that have been sold 10pcs to Japan or Africa lol. Those models you can use as comparing models to inspection center engineer and send the paperwork to proof for the DMV for approving/denying then engine swap. Compare model have to excatly the same model car. It feels the most brain dead thing ever when all the g-bodys share the same chassis basically.

But like i told, after you pass the inspection with the engine once, it's all good after that and i can do what i want to engine if it just hast the 5.7 / same vin on the side of the block.

If there really haven't been any 250hp models from Monte Carlo from 78-88 that would be around 300hp with added 20%, i might need to write the longest story ever about g-body chassis to officials to explain very good that even the buick gnx has same frame and much other stuff.

I will try to find powernumbers of that thing, but i'm pretty sure that it has 150kW max because the 87 buick i have only have 174kW with intercooled sfi turbo.
