Is the engine running correctly? Rich and especially lean mixtures cause pungent exhaust. There is also a weatherseal around the cowl to keep the cowl vents from sucking in underhood flumes. It could be missing or damaged.

Header to Head sealing up good?

I'm assuming it's a 496 in the car given the screen name..
update. started it up the other day to listen and look. heard a significant exhaust leak coming from the passenger side right under the firewall. after inspection, the last shop that i had put the exhaust together, must have pieced it together. its leaking bad in the joints of the pipe

engine runs great. it has a brawler carb that is adjusted good. i do have a fiberglass cowl hood, that is wide open no seal, or screen on the opening. never thought that would be the issue.

What headers?

2241 or 2455?

Windows up?

Windows down?

Heat or a/c?

How does the exhaust exit the body?
im not sure the model of hooker headers thats on it. i will check though when the ice and snow melts. its tolerable with the windows down, no heat or ac, the exhaust is dumped right before the rear end
