Orrrr swap in the DT466. That is/was what was commonly found in these and ideally you can then swap it over to stick shift for the extra gearing. Most were 6&7 speed trans but some came 5 speed with the split shift for 10 gears. If you can find one that is pre-emissions you dont need the DEF fluid. I recall up until around 1996-7 they still used a mechanical fuel pump instead of electronic fuel injection & emissions.

School buses are a great inexpensive and well maintained source for motors as well but most of those are auto trans.

I was thinking with the Brownie you'd just leave it in OD unless you needed to pull a car out of a hole or alter the earth's axis of rotation.

correction, I guess the 95 straight truck I had here for storage was the last year of the mechanical injection. Guy took it off my hands just for the fact that it was one of the last years before computers. I think he was building some sort of field truck / backup generator out of it.

I would leave the drive-train alone and instead convert that flatbed into a rollback!!

Rollback would be awesome, but the deck surface is about 4.5 feet in the air so the ramp down would be huge. It is still set up to be level with a dock.

The 8.1 would be cool, although it would be summer at the earliest before I could do any shopping.

The '26 had the 8.1L. I rented one a few years ago. I was really impressed with the acceleration. It even felt quick for a big truck loaded down with everything my ex owned at the time. It was an automatic transmission but I don't know which one.

Cool little project. I think I'd run the 7.3 until it blows. I know what you mean about the Cummins stuff being pricey. I looked into a 4BT swap for my F150 and price alone pretty much ruled it out.

on the 4bt search, don't restrict yourself to just the engine search. one of my best friends got a great deal on an old running bread truck with the 4bt/allison trans, and plans on using the engine for his ramcharger project, and plans on selling off the allson, and scrapping the body to re-coup some of the investment....

food for thought...
