20 years of GBodyForum? What's Next?

We all agree this is a great site. The question is what can be done to go another 20 years.
1. Us, as members to promote this site and the advertisers in our community of contacts.
2. We need to support the site.
3. When you buy a part for your ride, ask the vendor to support the site. They may not know it even exists.
4. Maybe set up an idea forum. If something piques your interest, it may all spark others. Give the moderator something to think about.

I think supporting the site is key. I didn't even think about that until last year I am embarrassed to say. Nowadays $25 is nothing. I know guys that toss $100 on the bar and don't blink an eye. Maybe when faced with the site shutting down, more will contribute. I sure hope so. It is absolutely worth it.

I really REALLY enjoy this forum. I came here from montecarloss.com and I love the depth of knowledge. The search feature covers darn near everything I could ever want to know about my cars. I like it the way it is, but I'm 40 and I grew up with forums. Even when I watch "good" youtube videos, they reference how good forums are for information. Social media platforms are made for phone people that don't like complete sentences and at this second, I'm still on my desktop computer.

I'd like to see how this forum could be used as an AI database and I've honestly thought of downloading the entire site to be used as the dataset and building a GPT. I don't know how GBF could monetize that, but it seems like a heck of lot of questions have already been answered here.

The only thing that I wish I could go back and save about this forum are the hundreds, if not thousands, of images that were hosted on photobucket.

The AI thing, it would be almost trivial to set up some sort of bot that answers the first post, etc. etc. I don't think at this point its useful, and from what I read going around the forum admin space... nobody really wants this. The goal is to get real people asking and answering questions, participating in the discussion...

(Not aimed specifically at any one person) Also yeah don't download the entire site to stick into a model/custom gpt. Not to be "that guy" but its not yours to do that with, generally speaking. Believe me I've considered it.... I'm sure its already been scraped several times over, but specifically ingesting an entire site you don't own, in an attempt to idk provide a "go around" for it is.....

Also yeah photobucket

I do like the idea of a Gbody-pedia. But the sticking point with that, IMO, is that if it kept with the same theme as the wikipedia, then anyone can edit it. It'd likely end up worse than a catagorized forum that had how-to's and tech information. Could you imagine GM crowd-sourcing technical information for their service manuals? Not that wiki's don't have merit, just that there's 2.7 million ways to skin a cat when it comes to tackling 1st-world G-body problems. I know at this point, AI-written stuff seems silly and easily spotted, but that's because AI is still learning from a lot of stupid people's inputs. GIGO. I enjoy the forum as is, some really cool ideas and methods are here for the members to use and keep their G-body on the road/track. And some of you guys have great senses of humor to keep things interesting. I just got my morning coffee so I know I'm just tossing words around disconnected and incoherent, but I'm simply typing as I'm thinking it.

There would be some opportunities for AI use in a forum-style such as this, I'd imagine. But when you start taking the human element out of a forum, people won't interact as much. Which is becoming more and more of a problem in society as a whole now as it is. I know every time I try to highlight something to copy/paste or edit it, microsoft wants to know if "copilot" could rewrite it for me. No, sorry, I sort of know enough English to get by. I don't need some twat of a program trying to "re-write" something that's originating in my head. I've always looked at the forums with this idealistic view: A G-body shell is sitting in the middle of a big garage, and all the members are sitting around BS'ing about the best way they would get that hulk up and running. Collaboration. There's your wiki. Bounce ideas off each other, mill around outside the garage and look at everyone's G-bodies they drove up in for inspiration and to generate new ideas, and finally someone puts down their favorite beverage and grabs a wrench and people follow.

Speaking of support, my supporting member stuff is due in like, 9 days or something.

Yeesh. Photobucket. I've never been spammed more than when I stopped using it. I started over 20 years ago using that dumpster fire. Was ok at first. I left a few hang-on photos on there when I gave it up seemingly forever ago, as they kept threatening to dump all the photos when they were going to start charging everyone for using a bucket. They were simply copies anyway, so I didn't GAF what they did with them. Sure, close my account. I don't care. Got messages for months with that threat. Ok, the close date came and went. To THIS DAY (acutally YESTERDAY- see deleted email below) they randomly send me a message asking if I want to keep my photos. WTF, phototrashcan? Anyone else getting these emails? I got their messages rerouted to trash. 😏

I am very new to the Gbody, i just acquired my '86 Monte Carlo SS in October 2024. However I am a longtime automotive forum user, back to when I had a '98 Nissan Maxima and would be on maxima.org a lot. I am happy to still see active online forums in the format of this site exist, as they really are the best for gathering information, and having an organized repository of knowledgeable discussion.

You have done a great job with the site, and the members have been super helpful during my short time here. Also the members over at montecarloss.com have been very helpful too.

As for the cars getting older and dwindling compared to 20 years ago, you are probably right. However with values climbing, there is still a set of people that are wanting these things, and the aftermarket to restore and upgrade them seems to be strong; I am able to get most of my parts online from one of many vendors.

This is my favorite forum I've explored. It's nice to find solutions to almost any issue that may come about with our cars. And it's always nice to see the creativity some of you have come up with to make your cars unique.

I'm as guilty as everyone else with not supporting the site as I should. This past year has been tight with having to buy diapers but I hope to be able to get that supporting member badge very soon.
One way that might help the site is to have special features for the supporting members only. For example, on a bmx forum I follow, you cannot post in the "for sale" section or post photos at all unless you are a supporting member. This would help the site with more support and stop some scammers as most scammers will not pay to list things for sale.
Just a couple ideas. I hate change as much as anyone else, but sometimes we have no choice but adapt to survive.
Here's to another 20 years 🍻
