20 years of GBodyForum? What's Next?

Would it be worth adding a category in the For Sale/Wanted section called 'Rides'? If someone is doing a long distance trip and has space or an empty trailer one-way, that could a useful resource to post. It may need some kind of time limit feature so that old news does not get someone's hopes up.

Yeah, it needs a lock on it after a certain time. There's always that one necromancer that pops the old ad up 7 years later asking- "You still heading to California this weekend? I have a part I need carried back..."

Ya know, whenever I see a G-body, even a crummy one, I ask if they are on G-BodyForum.com. They are NEVER on! I find it amazing. How are they struggling along with parts and repairs when this is the place to be? My first G-body I was looking for info, was led here, and never left. I do talk up the site but I rarely see that car owner again.

Oh btw, it took me 5 minutes of looking around to figure out how to become a supporting member; I would suggest taking a page out the ol' corporate playbook and making it as easy as possible for people to 'part with money' , i.e. support the forum - e.g. add a 'Support GBodyForum' button or something to the header next to the profile-notification-etc icons, or something. Just a thought 🙂

As a sidenote, I'm a software engineer and I feel I have a pretty good feeling for usability and making software interfaces intuitive and user friendly, so if you ever want a second opinion or to spar on something related to the layout or functionality or what ever of the site, just holler 🙂

I also really like the idea to have a 'suggestions box' sub-forum where people can post ideas about improvements, new features, etc., and members can discuss the idea and give input and improve upon it. I think it's an excellent, free resource for how to improve and stay relevant, even if you don't end up doing most of if.

This is a valid point. On the desktop there's a nondescript "Upgrade" link that really doesn't say what it is.... 🤔 On mobile its hidden in the hamburger menu and you probably didn't even know it was there.

I'll try and find a way to make it more prominent without being ridiculous. I'd like to do a periodic pop up that once you dismiss it, you wouldn't see it for a month or whatever. Not sure how that would be received, and those have a tendency to run into technical problems and just show all the time for some people.....

Yeah you would need a robust mechanism in place that would make sure users only get the pop up when intended - depending on how you control that, stuff like users that use multiple devices to look at the forum could result in undesired behavior.

Another consideration is that some users probably only log in e.g. every couple of weeks, and would then get the pop up every other time they open the forum - which may be fine, but some might find it too much/annoying. Just something to think about.

One thing that just popped into my head: I would love it if there was a dedicated app for the forum - not something specially developed for this forum in particular (way too expensive and too much overhead), but if it were possible to plug it into some existing generic forum app, then that could provide a nice experience for mobile users (I myself mostly visit on my phone). I have no idea if such an concept exists (although I remember seeing some popup when I opened some forum post from Google the other day, something like "Would you like to view this in the 'Tapa' app", but I can't remember what it was actually called). Any way, probably way too complicated and non-compatible with existing solutions, just to thought I'd throw it out there.

I have a Ford Taurus they can have. If they don't want to be a supporting member, I think we just swap keys. They got to give it up and got to take the Taurus.

Actually the next 20 years, I think we should be like George Jetson. Have flying cars, we all live in the clouds, everybody gets along, there's no strife, no robberies, no domestic violence, no child abuse.

And I'm still waiting for Musk to come out with the new Buick GNX, ...0 to 60 at 2.7 seconds, that would be a good start.

I wonder what a set of Lightning Rods would look like on a 10-speed?

Heh, that would be Tapatalk. I used to be a part of that, but they started pulling stupid crap like taking over the homepage with a full-page image "hey you should use tapatalk to view this forum!" and that was it. gone. Not only that but it opens the entire site database to their app and I'm not ok with that, either.

But its pretty trivial to just create a bookmark on your desktop/home screen and poof, "app."

Hah, I can very much understand why you wouldn't want to use tapatalk, that sounds very annoying, and opening up the entire db to them sounds a bit wild.

Yeah I agree it's trivial, it would just be 'neat' to have it in an actual app, it would be easier to have finer control for notifications, etc. But it's a only a nice-to-have, and probably not worth the hassle since I doubt there exists a nice plug-and-play solution out there that works well enough and doesn't require you to make bigger compromises than you would like.
