The carrier preload you can do by putting your thin shims in and using a thicker shim that you just can’t push in by hand. Tap it in with a hammer and the bearings are preloaded. Isn’t the backlash a little tight on that?

i;m a newbe at this one web site says .003 to .006 and another says .006 to ,010 for the backlash .imo the .006 to 010 would be safer is that correct ? just put in new ring and pinion and new bearings i have read to get carrier preload i should put in .010 shim on each side of the carrier is that correct ? thanks for your help

.010 on each side may be right but again, you’ll get the one side in and then you’ll have to tap the thick shim in on one side with a hammer. Backlash I’ve always been the 8-10 range.

No no for the backlash 8-10 total. For the carrier shims you can try adding 10 to each side but it may only allow .005 to each side to tap in the last shim without too much force.
