My best advice is, anyone who wants to know about oil, additives, and best practices, should look into it themselves. There is a lot of bad information out there, and what works for one guy and his engine may not work for another guy. Flat tappet cars will generally benefit from a higher...
No, STP can NOT "make up for missing zinc". Based on my research -- and DON'T take my word for it, look it up yourself -- the STP oil additive does NOT have enough zinc to make up for reduced-zinc oil. These things are subject to change, but it's my understanding that the STP only has 1900 PPM...
Looking good, can't wait to see more. If my car didn't run and drive so well, I'd love to do a frame-off too. Will probably do the best I can while it's still all connected. And yeah, transmissions are pretty mysterious to me. I'm willing to do a lot of my own work, but I'm not going to tear...
I don't think CAI is worth a ton, but if done properly, it won't hurt and may help. I base this on the fact that 4th Gen F-bodies saw about a tenth improvement in the quarter with it. Hopefully going from an open-element to CAI will be worth 1-2 tenths. Not betting the house on it, but still...
If this is a flat tappet motor (e.g. NOT a roller cam) then you might want to strongly consider using oil with sufficient zinc in it, such as Valvoline VR1. You could use a zinc additive instead, but the problem here is, a lot of wear happens at startup, and the zinc additive hasn't had a...
Ha ha I had the same thought 20 years ago when I was working on a restoration, and thought I'd never finish it. So I decided to buy a brand new '96 Camaro SS. It was too nice, so I put it away and bought something else to drive. That was too nice, so I bought something less nice, to drive...
That's fantastic! This is the sort of update that's good to see with old threads. ;) Congrats on getting the car back, and on picking a hell of a wife.
Ha ha you can't believe people turned it into a Chevy vs. Olds question, it's the Olds section and the guy has an Olds with an Olds motor currently, you admit you're "not the most mechanically skilled guy on the board", and you suggest possibly the LEAST plug-and-play Chevy solutions? You...
Ha ha ha the Olds/Chevy debate. Now, I'm the first guy to say "keep your Olds all Olds"...I personally feel this pretty strongly...but I also can get the "budget" angle that some guys are essentially forced to stick with. Some guys REALLY DO have low-paying jobs and work paycheck-to-paycheck...
The lack of styling isn't even in the same universe for me as the over-reliance on technology. I don't care if my car looks like a bar of soap, but infotainment and buttons and switches and gas pedals and steering wheels that do all of their controlling via a computer has pretty relegated me to...
Ha ha you'd think with all the centrifuge technology your government has been able to import, they'd figure out a way to get a couple G-body sway bars in. What about those G-body cabs? Anyway, I'd agree with the previous poster, anything is possible. Time to start fabbing.
Are you planning to keep the car? If so, go with what you prefer. I personally prefer the sealed-beams, but I also tend to like to leave certain aspects of my cars the way they were when I got them, that's why I'm keeping '84 grilles on my '83.
Ha ha this is cool. In the old days, it was big block and other original muscle cars that we'd scour for these things, now it's V6 cars and it doesn't mean much, but it's still a cool thing to find. My headliner is starting to sag too...maybe it's time to search for the old 3.8 build sheet. :)
Ha ha I wouldn't have put it so starkly, but yeah, unless you're going for originality, or you have a decent-running car, or you want to do some sort of experiment for the betterment of the 307 legend, hunting cabin duty is pretty good work for a 307. There are NOT that many Oldsmobile guys out...
