Great information regarding the transmission, thats one problem solved.

Can you tell me why the Schoelfeld and other headers say they will not work with AC then? This much be due to a tube interacting with the AC box but I can not get anyone to confirm this.

When ever I see wont work with AC I believe that is because of the bracket setup not the box

For the record, here the Holley headers are with a tube modified to clear the AC box. Overall I am quite happy.

Stunningly cheap for stainless. Any trouble welding on the 409?

That's a close fit, even after mods. You might want to make a heat shield to save the AC housing and hoses (?).

I have Schoenfelds in my 81. When I ordered them they said no way with AC. Im sure its the way the one tube goes high and down.

Yes,They weld fine. I have a very skilled fab shop doing this for me as it requires stainless tig. As you can see its the number 4 tube that needs attention on the AC cars. Its now parallel to the number 6 tube or slightly below and should work quite well. I do plan to employ some sort of heat shield or barrier in this area, I'm just not sure what.
