you're right, 17s can get pricey... even if you find a cheap set of wheels, the tires themselves will cost alot. And if you try to save on tires, the options are shitty foreign brands like Falken.
... so with that in mind, 16s will be well enough for your setup.

you are correct, there is no 245/55... But I was asking about a 225/55, which I believe would be closer to the height of a 245/50.

and I think you are correct about Crash's 255s as well, my bad...
275/40s are most common, I think a few brands make 275/45s. In either case you could stuff them in the back if you were strategic with backspacing and ride height, with no problems.

Sorry mid-read your post. Yes, there is a 225/55/16 tire. Would the 225/55/16 rub up front? I'm guessing not since the 245/50/16 up front has been said to have no rub up front. Would my stance look better with 245/50/16 all around or with 225/55/16 up front and 245/50/16 in the rear? It would actually be cheaper to just run the 245/50/16 all around but not by much so price would not be a concern in that area.

All this is giving me a headache. :blam:

🙂

lol, I think you're thinkin too much...
the 245 MIGHT rub up front, maybe at full turn... so I would not rule that out.

the 225/50 is nice, but it might look a little short in the front. That's why I suggested a 225/55
... both are same width, just one is taller.
... neither would rub, I almost garantee.

also... if you want to run skinnier tires infront, like 225, you might get away with a 7" wide rim infront. And that would almost garantee better fit. The 8" rim in the back would work fine.

you may want to check out www.wheelsforless.com they have REV wheels for cheap and include free valve stems and lug nuts and of course free shipping!

just go to the site and do a search for REV wheels and see what they got in your budget

So, up front would a 225/55/16 have a least amount of chance of rubbing than a 245/50/16?

I'm debating on a getting the 16" REV classic 100 wheels with either 245/50/16 all around or 225/55/16 up front and 245/50/16 in the rear. The 245/50/16 setup would a little bit less price wise and would give me the oppurtunity to rotate the tires later on if need be.

Also, should I go with the 16x7 in the front and the 16x8 in the rear? Would the 16x8 give it more or a wider look in the rear?

Thanks again for all your responses. This is a big decision. :blam:

😀

the ability to rotate tires is a BIG help! Specially on a rear drive car, they'll last much longer.
... if this is important for you, get 245s all around, on 8" rim.

if you wanna do 225s infront, get 7" rim. The 225s will still fit, it'll decrease your chances of rubbing, and it will look nicer with the staggered 8" rim at the back.

Ok. Let's review. lol. 😀

If I go with the 245/50 all around then I should go with 16x8 all around? Correct.

And If I go with the 225/55 in the front and 245/50 in the rear I should go with the 126x7 in the front and the 16x8 in the rear. Correct?

Question, wouldn't the 8" wheel (16x8) in the front with the 245/50 tire make it have a higher chance of rub than the 7" rim (16x7) with the 245/50 in the front?

And, I will more than likely be taking these wheels off during the peak of winter to save the chrome on them. The last chrome wheels I had were ruined by leaving them on during the winter. So the need to rotate might not be needed as much.

correct: 245/50s all around means 16x8s all around

correct: 225/55s can do 16x7 wheel in front, and 245/50s can do 16x8 wheel in back.

rubbing: both have an equal chance of rubbing if the backspacing is too much. Say both had 4" BS, then both would be equally close to the inside of the fender, only the outside dimension would be different. So this is something you have to play with.

but, I can almost garatee you that with 4" BS, you won't have any issues with either size.

I only recommended a skinnier wheel so that the skinnier 225 tire would look proportional. The stagger between front and back would look nice too.

Thanks for the help.

The 16x8's have a 4.5 backspace while the 16x7 have a 4.0 backspace.

So, I know it's my car and all but what route would you go with the tires options I mentioned? Like I said, I know it's MY car but how would you go with it?

if the 16x8s have 4.5", it might be a little tight in the front. So I would just do 16x7s infront, cuz 4" BS will definitely fit, with 225/55R16 tires.

the 245s on 16x8s should be fine in the back. If they are a little tight, you can use a small spacer, like 1/4" or 3/8". Just will need some extended studs.

"that's what I'd do"

Here's a little input from my end.

When I lowered the car I started with the GTA 16x8" wheels and I had a used pair of factory F-body 245-50 Goodyear Eagles on the rear and I bought some cheapie 225-50-16s for the front. The rears looked pretty fat and the fronts fit well. When they were worn out I bought BFG G-force 225-50 and opted for a "wider" 255-50 out back. I could tell right away that the rear tires looked taller, but also "appeared" not as wide as the 245's. Looking at the car it looks like too much of a difference in height between the 225 and 255. I like a bit of a rake, but I think it's too much. Personally if you have a stock or even slightly lowered ride height, I think the 225 will look too short up front. My car is slammed 4" and I still think it looks too little.

Generally speaking, going from a 50 to a 55 series tire will give a tire a slight different look. Not sure why they do it but the lower the profile the more the manufacturers seem to spread the tread out. If you look at tire specs (tirerack.com is a great resource for getting general measurements) and look at for example a 245-50 and a 245-55 you'll see the OVERALL width of both the tires is 245mm but the TREAD width may be +/- 1/2" skinnier on the 55's. This does a visual trick to the eye as we tend to see the tread as the width, and the tire will appear skinnier. This is also true between manufacturers. On my original Goodyears they spread the tread almost as wide as the section (overall) width. On the BFGs although the section width was 10mm wider than the Goodyears the tread was thinner so the 245's actually appeared wider and that was a little disappointing since the whole idea of the 255 was to get a wider look.

My wheels have 4.5" of backspacing on the 16x8"s. Being that low I have cracked the left side wheel well from hitting a big bump. I also had to grind just a little on rear side of the lower control arms where they would rub slightly. Other than that only rubbing issues is a slight bit in reverse at full lock. We tried clip on wheel weights at first on the inner lips and that didn't go over well at all. Tape on weights only. Again my car is unique because it is so low, yours may not have the same issues I have. Check out my build thread for photos.

I will be running 17x9.5 wheels and 255-40-17s up front when I change some things around. This will include raising the car 1". I've heard with the right backspace you can fit a 275-40-17 on a 9.5" wheel.

If it were me I would either go with all 245 50's or all 255 50's so you can rotate and make your tires last longer. You can go with 245's up front and 255's out back but the inability to rotate which equals funny wear patterns or wearing out tires more quickly just isn't wort the 10mm in width.

On the other hand you could do some more shopping. If you really want a 17, you can make it work on your budget.

Your set-up-
Wheels $196x4= $784
Tires $94 x 4= $376= $1160 total

Found these-
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findWheelDetail.do?bp=5-120.6&pc=23193&counter=2&wd=17&rw=8

Wheels- $146x4=$584
Tires- 245-45-17 (a good tire height for stock height and 1" lowered cars) $105x4= $420
Total= $1004 - $50 instant rebate = $954 - $30 by using their credit account = $924

That leaves you with $236 to buy your GF/wife some roses and a new dress so you don't get put in the dog house for putting new rims on the car.

Or Chrome-
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findWheelDetail.do?bp=5-120.6&pc=23192&counter=3&wd=17&rw=8

Wheels- $200x4= $800
Tires- $105x4= $420, Total= 1220 - $50 instant rebate = $1170, only $10 more than what you plan on spending on 16's.

- $30 credit rebate = $1140 now you at least have enough left over to take the GF/wife on a cheap date to smooth her over.

Why buy 2 sets of wheels over the next couple of years? Go with the 17's now, especially if you planned on it for the future anyway, JMO.
