A buddy of mine was moving a few years ago and did a garage clean out. I inherited a 1957 standard bore 283 SBC bare block(no crank, rods/pistons, only main caps-BARE). 57 is unique in that it only has front engine mount holes and first year for 283. The only persons I think it would be desirable to is the 100 point resto crowd if they want a correct casted date code. This one is May 5, 57, and has a T712F engine code- 283 2brl PG? I know you guys cover a wide range here. Any ideas on how to get this to the "right" person? Not wanting to make my first million on the sale, just looking to rehome it.

Hemmings Motor News has online classifieds. Might be one source, given how widely the 283 was used, even into pickup trucks.

You'd need to decide a price first, and the question becomes whether you get it fluxed to ask the most, or take very very little as a pure gamble purchase

One more thing...

A May 1957 casting probably didn't make it into a 1957 car... it would've been in an early 1958 model more likely than not.

Don't forget FDRs labor friendly order that new car models be launched in the fall of the preceding year largely for labor certainty, and keeping paychecks rolling to boost holiday spending... or so the story goes.

It usually took a few weeks for an engine to make it through the foundry, into finishing, into an assembled engine, then over to a factory for installation.

1957 model year assembly probably was over by the time that engine hit the assembly line I'd think. Just give a buyer all the info and list as a 1957 casting, not necessarily a 57 motor, and should be fine.

With a July 12 assembly date, it's going to be a very late '57, 1958 production would have begun in August

Suffix F was not used in 1958. It was used in both 1955 on the 265, and 1957 on the 283, and again a decade or so later

Being an early casting, It should go to 4" bore, if you wanted to build a "301" (GM marketed it as a 302)

Good info. Sounds like op is either looking for a needle in the haystack buyer, or, someone who doesn't care about the date but has interest in a period correct motor.

Might want to check out a Tri-Five or Vette site & try to see if anyone will bite.
Yea, I was hoping one of you guys could tell me the GBF version of the Tri-Five or classic Vette world. This is the most reliable, stable Forum I have ever participated in. To clarify, the T712F code is the one stamped into the pad on the front passenger side cylinder head. My prior research indicated the 283 2brl. PG combo.

My guess is your average trifive owner doesn't understand how to use a computer let alone the internet, although, I hear they are making inroads with their jitterbug phones.

Meanwhile, your average 50s vette owner bought his car at Barrett Jackson and is horrified at the idea of oil touching his hands.
