I am a diehard Pontiac guy and have to admit the 301 is "our" red headed step child.
It is fine for a Numbers matching TA or for a mild cruiser at best.

Start with a poor intake/heads and weak crank ( see below ),$ per gain there are much better ways to go.
I have done it, so I am a "nutcase" also.
As a low mileage motor I would just do the basics, 4 barrel,igniton and smaller daul exhuast. Tune it to death and enjoy.
