i have a 1980 cutlass and is trying to put a chevy 350 in it but the mounts to the motor is off a 1/4 of a inch im thinking i need to change the mounts to the motor im not sure any suggestion
Good news you can upgrade to an Olds 350/403 and not only will it bolt right in but your accessories brackets & pullies can be retained fuel line, starter & battery wires etc are in the right place & length transmission bolt pattern etc. Oh and somebody will probably buy that 350 Chevy to put in their caprice station wagon etc to defray your cost. 😉
well i have already got the motor mounts for the frame the same that were on the motor bolted the down and the motor still will not go in im thinking that i have to spot weld the mounts to the frame

There is no need to weld. Someone did that to my car so now I am stuck with SBCS in my car forever! Unless I chip them out. Plus you can not be sure about the correct hight and positioning. If it is off even a little your transmission wont mount right, you wont be able to get to the bolts that connect the trans to the motor AND your headers will hit in all kinda dumb places. It is not worth it!
The motor mounts for a 305 will work. YOu need to go back to autozone and look up the mounts for a 1980 Cutlass with VIN Code H. That will be a SBC 305 (same as the 1980 MC). They WILL mount correctly but only three holes match up, the 4th bottom front one I think is the only one that does not bolt in. Then you have to have the right mounts that go on the block itself and assuming you have a dual pattern transmission (my 1980 did NOT have a dual pattern th350) you might need another transmission. 🙁
If you have the SBC frame mounts on the frame in the correct position, it will line up. There is no differences. If you are trying to put the motor in with the transmission in place, you may have to pull the transmission and bolt it up to the engine and drop it all in together.
