Who would've thought finding a tailshaft seal for a TH400 would be such a pain? Special order only from Blow Reilly's so I asked my friend with a trans shop if he could get me one. He hits me back and says there are 4 to choose from. Awesome. So I start poking around the Google to see if I can get an idea of what to look for and I stumble upon another piece of information: there are o-ring and non o-ring yokes. If you try to put a non on an o-ring output it doesn't go on all the way.

You can only push the yoke in another inch tops from there. F00k me. The only pic I have with the tail housing off is straight on, so can't see the oring, but I'm certain it's there. It seemed like the yoke didn't slide on far enough and now I can see that's because it couldn't. So he managed to perfectly size a custom driveshaft to the thing using the wrong yoke and thought nothing of it. Amazing.
 
I’m sure you’re aware, that yoke hanging out that far is probably why the seal is leaking.

I’d run it until I gather up a new yoke and seal and drop the money in a new shaft.

I doubt how far it hangs out has anything to do with the leak. But there are other potential factors, like is it a vented yoke? With it not on the oring that's a leak right there. Especially the way the trans had been @$$ down all this time. Unless you mean that, with it out so far, it'll whip around more and beat up the seal causing it to leak. That I could see. My hope is to find a junkyard aluminum truck driveshaft and yoke and get that shortened. Use a conversion joint back at the diff and call it a day. I think that's the best bang for the buck if I can find one with the right yoke, but I don't know how long a yoke I should be hunting for with the 4" tail housing, or even if a 4L80 yoke would be the correct length for that. More research to be done, but for now the thing works well enough to move itself under its own power. I won't be able to get any tuning done before the fam gets back, so once I wrap up this round it'll be a while before I'm back on the car again.
 
To heck with those aluminum shafts. A steel 3” shaft is stronger and it will have a lot less tunnel and driveshaft loop clearance issues.

But I completely understand finding something used that can be shortened and balanced with no materials - definitely cheaper.

I was under the impression that a 4L80 and TH400 use the same yoke spline and share the same outer diameter - I could be wrong.
 
That's higher on the list of sketchy than some of the other things here..

And one of the main reasons that, since spotting how far out the yoke hangs, I haven't left the airport property with it or exceeded 30 mph with it. That, the brake line, and the radiator waiting to fall out are why I never pressed with tuning the carb in all this time. Those reason are why I suspected there was more, and boy was I right. I feel sufficiently apprised to make a calculated risk decision going forward on when good enough is good enough when it comes time to tune the carb and tweak the ignition.

It's not the spline count or OD that concern me, rather the depth of the yoke itself and the depth of the non-splined section that rides that oring. Again, more homework. It's probably an easy answer, I just don't know what I don't know.

When it does come time, the road the airport is off of is absolutely perfect for tuning so wouldn't be that far of a walk worst come to worst.
