You are 100% right - called round off

350 with a 400 crank .030 over is 382.67
350 with a 350 crank std bore is 349.85

😉

But what he was saying is he made a 383 out of a 400. He worded it weird I guess, probably meant with a 400 crank, not the entire engine, block and all.

400 block bored .060 over w/ 350 crank is 382.96
I know. But that's kinda the bass ackwards way to make one, I listed that as the other option. I mean, it's possible, but why?

How did you get a 383 from a 400? I know a destroked 400 is a 377 with a .030... is it a destroked 400 that's .060 over? That's 382.96 cu. Chevy 400 is 4.125 bore and 3.75 stroke, you destroke it with a 350 crank if I remember right, which makes it 4.125 (stock bore) x 3.48 is a 372. +.060 over is 382.9. Just confused is all.

I wish i knew! Im pretty new at this. I bought the motor from a mechanic, brought it back to the machine shop that built it. Elsasser in miller place ny. They told me that it was a 400sbc, 383. Guess i could have mis understood him when he said 400, it also says 383 on the flywheel.

Take it apart, or take a head off and measure the bore. SBC 350s can only really go .060 (I've seen higher, but you gotta be insane to do that) to 4.060. Stock 400 bore is 4.125 as I've said. No 350 can go .125 overbore. .030 over 350 with a 400 crank (with the mains turned down .2 so it will actually fit into a 350 block) is 383, and .060 is a 388.

The block is a 3970010. Just looking online quickly its a 350 block not a 400.

Correct, an "010" block casting is a 350 with 4 bolt mains. Either it has a 400 crank and 5.7" rods, or the block is clearanced for 6" rods and a 350 crank.

So now that we know it's a 383 made from a 350 block..
Next debate is it a 400 crank with the journals turned down to a 350 or an aftermarket Eagle or Scat crank. lol
