What year is this and we still waste time with the flawed and failed time and time again 383 strokers?

Im also thinking of buying a complete donor motor. The engine only has a crank pulley and water pump on it. Cheaper to buy a motor or ind. Pieces ?
Chevy parts grow on trees. Buy new if you can.

I wish i knew! Im pretty new at this. I bought the motor from a mechanic, brought it back to the machine shop that built it. Elsasser in miller place ny. They told me that it was a 400sbc, 383. Guess i could have mis understood him when he said 400, it also says 383 on the flywheel.
Yous bought an engine in Milla Place? On 25A?

Engines by Elsasser Mad Scientist Race Engines.

Mostly roundy round engines

Never used them Never heard good or bad about them.

Ask them what shop balanced the engine.

I am curious if they will tell you the truth

That sounds vaguely familiar from my Riverhead days.

Okay. What type of motor mounts should i go with? Solid or promethane...
*polyurethane, and never go solid. no reason to unless it's a hardcore racecar. Poly will be fine, local auto parts stores should have them. You will need the frame mounts as well, don't know if they carry them. You will need a poly trans mount too. If you have a mix of rubber and poly you can break stuff. Rubber motor mounts and poly trans mount = broken trans.

Question: why not sell the 383 stroker and get an olds 350? it'd bolt right in, can use a 455 top end, etc. Also since you pulled an olds out of it, it has a BOP transmission as well, unless you lucked out and it's a 4 speed TH200r4. 99% of those were dual pattern.

My 86' Regal has a dual pattern 200r4 and changing frame mounts and getting pulleys etc. for the SBC is a relatively easy task, the problem going with an Olds engine is availability, I know around here I never see a good running B.O.P. engine for sale and if you find one they are usually torn apart and people get screwed daily from machine shops if you don't already have a good one you can trust.
The reality is these engines have not been in production in 35+ years so saying why don't you go out and get one isn't as simple as going to your local dealer and getting a new crate engine with a warranty that you can still do with a SBC.
