im really wanting to upgrade my rear end to 3.42s and really not sure where to start. I have 2.14 gears and 7.5 inch ring gear 10 bolt. does anyone know where or who I would go to get the best set up I can get but still wont break my wallet. I thought I could get just a ring gear and pinion. but I heard that I need to get the hole carrier housing. and I would love to make it posi. trac. I just don't want to buy the wrong set up and installation kit and then my car be down for several days.

If you don't have the tools or knowledge to properly set up a rear gear you can take your car to a local ring and pinion shop and see what they want to install a gear and carrier.

That's the webiste for Randy's. Great place, decent prices. If you haven't set up gears before it's kinda like black magic. LOL until I found out the big secret. When you disassemble your rear. Keep all of the shims and MAKE SURE you are 100% positive where they were each located! Install new ring and pinion using the same shims in the same exact locations. 90% chance that your pattern will be perfect .... Your not shimming the gears, your actually shimming the housing that's why you can use the same ones and be very close if not perfect.

Forgot about spline count - 1982-89 are 26 1990-up are 28

Need a set of junkyard S-10 2WD axles and make an 1/8"-1/4" spacer for each side. Pretty easy. That torsen and gears is a deal. Less than $400 have a 3.42 and a fresh rear.

I slapped a used posi carrier and used 4.10s in Natasha's old Camaro and it went in like butter (other than the crushing the crush sleeve). Used the original shims and all. If the parts are sound, the install should be too.

You can never have enough gear.

You have be knowledgeable as said to do it. I have done three 7.5's, other than exploding spider gears, they all held up fine. Pinion depth is key and backlash needs to be in spec, on the high side is better than being too tight. If you have reasonable power, thicker gears and Yukon spider gears will be fine. Add $350 to $500 for a good posi. Those Camaro/Firebird 4th gen gears with the Zexel Torsen posi are very good but require 28 spline either GN 8.5" axles or aftermarket Moser axles. If the S-10 axles can work, then it can be done no doubt cheaper.
