The thing that’s holding me back is that I’m really on a tight budget with this car, not meaning I can’t afford it but if it’s worth it I could, but for now the 2.29 might have to do

I just realized that, I’m pretty sure this is what I need, that 2.29 ratio is going to be garbage on acceleration, and this won’t change the gas mileage that muchWrong for the axle he has, that's for an 8.5".
If funds are limited, look for a gear set that fits the carrier you have (3.08 and numerically less). Once you are into a 3.23 and up you'd need a new carrier. If you can turn up a cheap set I'd put a 3.08 gear set in and not look back, esp with 3 spd auto and a budget...

I’m in southern Ontario guaranteed I can’t find anything at a junkyard, Canada sucks for g body parts lolif you have time to wait and still want cheap, find other vehicles with same type differential and research what gear ratios they have. then look up the RPO codes on GM Heritage site. THEN go visit the junkyard, find the vehicles, check the glovebox SPID stickers (or the rear axle stampings as needed), and you'll cover more territory that way. I'm willing to bet not many people pull the rear gears at a yard (at least, that's been my observation), so the selection should be pretty good.
With the kit I’m looking at all that matters for fitting is that it’s a 10 bolt 7.5in 26 spline, that’s so it can fit my housing and axles the rest in just installing which I would need to figure out with the shims and what notmake sure you order the right parts on the g bodys the 1978 -1981 are different than the 1982 and up
staying with the 26-spline is going to be the main issue. that really limits what you can swap in/out unless you buy newWith the kit I’m looking at all that matters for fitting is that it’s a 10 bolt 7.5in 26 spline, that’s so it can fit my housing and axles the rest in just installing which I would need to figure out with the shims and what not
What do you mean new? The whole kit I showed accommodates 26 spline, I shouldn’t have to swap out my axlesstaying with the 26-spline is going to be the main issue. that really limits what you can swap in/out unless you buy new
