im just wondering if anyone here has built a 2bolt main. id like to just add cam and nice heads along with the rest of the top end. i was wondering what kinds of power and rpms the 2bolts can handle and if just adding a cam and upgrading the top end will do a lot for me power wise

Well the 400's only came in 2 bolt, and there's been a fair share of those built.

400 SBC came in 4 bolt mains also just not as common, they had an extra freeze plug on each side of the block so you could tell without even pulling the oil pan.

2 bolt main blocks will handle anything you want to through at it. Is it a flat tappet cam motor or a roller cam block. If its a flat tappet just use a Comp. EX-268 cam and a steel shim head gasket to get some compression. Most came with dished pistons around 8.5-1 so a set of Vortec heads with the fast burn 64cc chambers will help a lot. Car Craft did the Junk Yard Jewel and made close to 400hp with a seasoned block shim head gaskets the comp cam and the vortec heads. I have build 7 of these motors and every one was very pleased with it. If its a roller cam block then their are several good choices their to.

its flat tappet but i am willing to save up for some nice used heads and get some roller rockers and cam. id like to do a 383 but it might not make sense to say this but its too pricy even though ill spend a ton with the top end lol

What kind of budget are you working with. A simple fresh rebuilt 350 vortec is $900 and it makes great power with the factory roller cam. Add a few bucks for a set of after market self aliening roller 1.6 rockers and you set. You will need a electric fuel pump because the factory vortec cams have no provision for a fuel pump.

Really depends on what you wanna do...my 1st sbc was 2-bolt/2-pc 010 block. I put in a new rotating assembly from eagle with flat top pistons and cast crank, high volume oil pump, comp flat tap k12-206-2 k-kit, and nice dual plane intake. Left heads stock except for new springs from k-kit and through headers and dual exhuast. Was a nice little motor, no idea on horse power it made. 8.7:1 cr and had more than enough power for daily driver/cruiser. Also side note that if you can afford machine work I've been "told" that a 2-bolt block upgraded to an aftermarket 4-bolt splayed main is much stronger than standard 4-bolt main.

yea having it splayed will help a lot and i dont have a vortec motor and i dont really have a budget as more of a time id like to have constraint. id like to have it driving by next summer. that seems like a good bit of time but keep in mind that im 17 and working part time with co-op in highschool at 9/hr at my trans shop

For what you want to do a 2 bolt will be no problem - studs will help. I'm going to make a suggestion since your just starting out keep your car running as 565 suggested, and work on making it look pretty. 350 4 bolts are dirt cheap (I think I have 4 of them in the garage) pick one up and take your time building it. Where are you located in Mi.
