Re: 700R4 behind 468

I was kinda planning on buying all the parts I need with a good high performance rebuild kit and then build it myself in automatics class when the time comes. I wont be racing this car but i dont wanna have to worry about breaking it everytime I wanna have alittle fun.

Thanks for the link Dogshit I checked them out and they seem like the best bang for the buck and I have heard good things about them. I seen somewhere in a Hotrod forum that a guy bought all the parts he needed like the corvette servo and rebuilt it himself for his 550 lbs-ft 468. He had around $500-600 in parts but that was it since he built it. I know the 700r4 is referred to as a nightmare when it comes to rebuilding but I will have the knowledge and experience of a certified instructor at my disposal to make sure I dont screw it up.

Re: 700R4 behind 468

I also agree that both the 700R4 and 2004R can be built to handle quite a bit of power if built correctly. I run a stage 4 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrives also, with a few billet upgrades of my own. It handles the SBC 406 in my SS fine without any problems since I bought the trans 8 years ago. My engine isn't a BBC but it made over 600 hp and 570 torque on the dyno. It also still retains the lock-up feature in the 9 inch 4000 stall Vigilante converter. A friend of mine that runs a transmission shop runs a 2004R in his GN that's hopped up and runs on alcohol in the low 10's. He built it himself with alot of billet and other upgraded parts. SO I guess it all depends on your preference and your wallet, either one can work well.

Thats the thing man, im trying to save as much money as possible by building it myself. I have done some looking and I have found that to have a shop rebuild it to hold the power im looking at roughly $900-1500 total. Or I can go to Bowtie overdrives and get one for about $1400 plus shipping and handling. If I do it myself im only paying for parts but if something happens its my *ss.

Re: 700R4 behind 468

crotchss Thats great I had never seen one hold up to that kind or torque. Have you run drag radials or slicks? I always thought the ultra low first gear was ideally suited to get a smog era 305 moving a heavy pick up truck but overkill & too low or short for a big block that lays down brutal torque in the lower rpms ie too easy to just blister the tires off the line. Plus it never came in a gbody like the 200-4R did so you get into drive shaft cutting etc. Obviously it can be made to work well though. As with motors and the rest of hot rod anything its all in how you build it.

Re: 700R4 behind 468

After doing some looking I found a good useable "as-is" 200-4R for sale about 40 minutes from me for $150. It came from an el camino and im gonna see if I can talk him down. I believe its the same guy I got my rear from a year ago and he was easy to deal with. Could I use my stock cross member with this or is there a specific cross member needed? I know about the frame extension for the 200's but havent found much info for the cross member.
