i am having some shifting issues with my 2004r. it will shift just fine from 1-2. from 2nd to 3rd i need to let off the gas for it to change. once in 3rd it holds fine and will continue to accelerating. reverse also works fine. The change literally happened over night. drive fine one day next day like crap as soon as i got in the car. has fresh fluid, proper level. seen evrything from a stuck tv plunger to broken springs or possibly need total overhaul. what can i look for and where without tearing it out of the car first .

This is old so you might have figured it out already. Another trick is with the engine running in park, give the TV cable a few quick full pulls. This will spike the pressure and hopefully blow out any crap stuck in the system. If it started overnight I would pull the governor and make sure it’s opening and closing smooth along the full sweep. Shifts are a determined by a tug of war between the Throttle Valve and the governor.

it's broke!

Reset the TV cable. Pull it by hand, if it doesn't spring back, the plunger is stuck.

It has already been pulled and replaced for a freshly rebiult one that was suppose to go into my other wagon. now i will need to have this one rebiult to go into the other car. side note ATP tv cables suck. 2 brand new self adjusting tv cables direct replacement for a monte ss. niether will self adjust for the intial setting. had to do it completely by feel and few minor tweaks road testing.

on the old trans, i tried the tugging the cable, checked the fluid level. there is something up with it. it would clunk hard when putting into reverse or into drive,it always shifted weird when driving, then when it would not go into 3rd gear without issue i just yanked it and said im done with it. seems like the direct drive band probably gave out. all sorts of crap in the pan and it had fresh fluid from maybe 1000 miles ago when i did a pan drop and put in new filter. shifts nice and crisp now . cant say smooth with the shift kit thats in it  . as a bonus no more clunking when going into reverse or drive.
