Timing issue

I know might be a bit pricey, yet would be good idea to get a boresight camera down the hole and look at the gear on the cam. I just looked at the harbor freight unit, $84 here in Arizona.

Typically once gears start to wear they will continue to wear in the direction and method of the previous problem. So you can go with the melonized or a bronze gear, as the melonized is suggested but if the cam gear is bad or damaged it will continue to wear as such.

That's how my bronze gear looked after one year.i can't say if I experienced any fluctuation in timing but it was reason enough for me to change to the melonized gear.the pro billet's shafts .500" btw.

One more question (I'll be calling Holley tomorrow to ask specifically) but my current gear only has one roll pin hole but this comp gear (pictured here) has 2 - is that just because this is a "universal" one? Or do I specifically need one with only 1 hole (the Summit brand has only 1)

Its not two holes... the one towards the bottom is for the roll pin, the one towards the gear is a dimple, its to align it with the rotor tip, the gear has to installed a certain way.

🤦🏻‍♂️ doh! (Thank you!) i knew there was supposed to be an alignment dimple but that looked like 2 holes

The finish on that gear also signifies that it's a melonized part,a buddy of mine was parting out a 2000s era S10 the distributor gear out of that looked just like that,it was the smaller of the 2 diameters though. So I was in your shoes with this gear situation just over a year ago and I could not get a solid answer out of MSD or holley whatever the hell it is now about what gear make up came on that distributor. The guy on the phone he seemed kind of shaky about the answer steel or iron( and it's not his fault I understand he's only telling me what he's told)and I emailed the question and got a conflicting answer so melanized was the way to go. I've since pulled the motor apart and that gear has no wear.
