Timing issue

Update: Changed the oil, only had a tiny amount of black metal on the magnet from the gear. Put the new gear on and had it sit the same as the way the gear came on the distributor. Dropped it back in no issues, and there was no rotational play when I tried to move the rotor (there was 1/2 inch or more before). Car fired right up, timing was almost dead on, got it warmed up, and sounds great. The only thing is it just snowed here (New Jersey) so I can't take it out on the road tonight to check WOT. Soon as I'm able to do that I'll report back here! Thank you for all the advice on this - I'll let you know how it goes.

Line up the tip of the rotor with the roll pin hole thats between the teeth.... thats the correct way.

So I ended up putting the new gear on the way the one was that came with the distributor, and it fired right up and timing was dead on...I'm assuming because it's an aftermarket cam/distributor and I don't have a vacuum advance canister to worry about getting in the way, it's all good? It dropped right in the exact spot and all seemed fine.

You;ll know for sure after you take it for a drive... then check the timing again, if all is ok, just leave it alone, if not, rotate the gear, you will want to pull the distributor out anyways to check the wear on the teeth just to be sure.

So you have the model thats without a vacuum can... for racing all the time, thats fine, but for the street, you'll need it for better power and fuel economy.
