This is a new one for me, need help

My car doesn't want to stick in overdrive when it's under load.

Goes through 1,2,3 no problem-any load, but when it upshifts into OD it starts to surge and it seems to be kicking in and out between 3rd and OD. If I ease into overdrive on a flat grade, it goes in and stays in no problem.

Any ideas? Anything I can do to pinpoint or figure out the problem?

Re: 2004r Trans Problem

Are you sure its switching between 3rd and 4th? Or is it just the lock-up converter cycling on and off?

To be honest, I don't know. It definately loses power when it happens, and then power is up, down, up down. I did drop the shifter into D at one point and it continued to do the same thing.
So maybe it's the lock up?
I've had zero trans issues over the years, so I'm dumb to this one.

Re: 2004r Trans Problem

just disconnect the converter wires and road test....if it stops the you know it's the converter.....jesse

Re: 2004r Trans Problem

if thats the issue you should be able to replace the lock up solenoid and that should take care of that problem, i had something similar happen to me it would randomly lock up after a while, does it seem to shift kind hard sometimes?

Re: 2004r Trans Problem

as said unplug the trans and see what happens. (but first check the trans fluid and PROPERLY adjust the TV cable!!!!!)
if those 3 things check out i'm assuming that you don't have enough fluid pressure and the trans is starting to go.

I'm not sure this is even transmission related now.
Yesterday I went for a 40 minute run. I warmed the car before I left, but as I was trying to accelerate, the car kept losing power under any kind of load. It was worse at the beginning of the drive, but not near as bad by the time I was almost home.
It doesn't feel like trans. slip, it feels like loss of fuel or spark. It starts to die, then goes, cycling like that until I get off the gas. Seems to happen at about the 2500rpm area :?

I'm going to check ignition and plugs today as I hope it's that and not the trans giving up. I'll also try unhooking the lock up and see what happens. I don't think it's bad gas because I've filled from 2 different locations in the past week
The problem is getting worse and happening in all gears now.

Going to pull and replace fuel filter too.

Any other ideas as to what could be causing this, please post them

My 86' Regal with a 307V8 and 200-4R does the same things (I think). First, my original catalytic converter got clogged up and caused all kinds of drivability issues and it took a while to figure out. The car would surge on the highway (55MPH+), gain power lose power, etc., so we ended up changing the fuel filter. This helped at first, meaning that the filter needed replaced, but the symptoms came back, but worse. I couldn't get the car over 50MPH and overall felt like it had no power. It also made a "ticking" sound at low speeds. So I ended up putting a new fuel pump on, but again, this was not the issue, since the old pump seemed fine when I checked it after I took it off. The first start up after the new fuel pump was installed, the engine still ticked and I was about ready to haul the car to the junkyard.

Then out of the blue I thought about the catalytic converter. Took it off, hallowed it out, put it back on. Started the car up, no ticking. Took it for a drive and it chirped the tires from a stop and ran better than it ever did before. No major issues since, at least I have been able to cruise at 75MPH, where it runs its best.

Also, my transmission also seems to get "confused" at 45MPH with light pressure on the accelerator. The road I drive on goes from 50MPH to a 40MPH zone, and the car does great to get up through the gears while accelerating, but when I let of the gas in the 40MPH zone and piddle, the transmission seems to slip back into the previous gear (I believe 3rd back to 2nd). The engine revs for a second, then goes back into the higher gear. I haven't figured it out yet, I don't understand why the transmission would slip, it hasn't been beat, it is behind a 307 car. My theory is that since my engine is worn out that it isn't making enough power for the transmission/torque converter to function properly at all times.

Hmm, hadn't thought of the cat. I didn't mention it's a computer controlled carb too.
Anyways...
Today I changed the fuel filter and replaced a bunch of vac hoses that were original. Also unplugged the trans. No change.
If I hold the pedal down it just keeps going up and down in power. I assume if the trans is going it would slip and thus rpm would stay up but car wouldn't go faster?

Any way to check fuel flow? Would a pump act up only under heavy throttle? I'm not too swift at troubleshooting.

Tomorrow I'll pull plugs etc. I'm too ****ing cold to do more today

the fuel pump would be a problem pretty much all the time, maybe not at idle. unfortunately there's no good way to check fuel volume, but if you have proper pressure the volume will almost certainly be good--only assume this on a positive displacement pump. a fuel gauge and T fitting will give you the pressure--should be about 5psi
i'm interested to see the spark plugs as they can tell a whole lot.
i'm not too knowledgeable with the computer carbs, but i think the mixture control solenoid might be able to cause your issue. luckily they aren't hard to diagnose with a good multimeter and a repair manual.
