Hey guys
Last week I was fortunate enough to almost literally "stumble" across an '85 442 in the wreckers. After confirming that the diff was indeed the 8.5" 10 bolt with the desireable 3:73 gears, it "followed" me home last Sunday.
I had posted a request for some info on the axle tube stamping, and forum member Oldsmobile Joe graciously provided me with the info I was looking for. (Thanks again Joe!)
Through THAT discussion, it was made very clear to me from a couple guys here that I should return and grab the 200r4 out of it as it is apparently highly desirable as well.
Well wouldn't you know it, it turns out the transmission "followed" me home as well yesterday after an early morning visit to the junkyard.

Which now brings me to the point of this post:
The 442 was a buckets/console car, but someone beat me to it and snagged the shifter, shifter cable, and the bracket off the side of the pan before I got there.
They left the (broken) console however, so I was at least able to grab the upper insert that has the correct number of "windows" for the light to indicate gear position. So, couple questions here:

Question 1:
Can I use ANY 200r4 pan bracket off of say, a mid to late 80's Delta 88 or similar car?

Question 2:
Isn't really so much a question, but I'm thinking I should be able to just buy a new replacement shifter cable for an '85 442 with console shift from the local parts supply store... Anyone know if I'll be able to or not?

Question 3:
The console shifter in my '80 Cutlass is only the 3 speed for the TH350 that's currently in it. Do I absolutely need the 4 speed shifter, or can my existing 3 speed one be modified to work with the additional gear? Are there only 3 "gates" in my stock shifter, one for each forward gear?

And finally Question 4:
If I'm unable to use my existing 3 speed shifter, anyone got the necessary 4 speed shifter I'd need for sale? I also DEFINITELY need the 4 speed wood grain trim cover to go back on the console. Anyone have one of those for sale as well?

Thanks in advance for any and all help anyone can provide here guys.

Donovan

P.S. - build thread coming soon on Project Olds Cool, the second '80 Cutlass these parts are going into...

question 1, the brackets are all the same if it's on a 200 4r
question 2, I bought a new cable from a parts store when I had the 200 4r
question 3, you need to get the correct shifter
question 4, I don't have what you need

My question 1, why don't you just go out for walks every day until all the parts you need "follow" you home

so do you need the console or not? i have a 2004r trans pan bracket, and cable with excellent cond grommit(which is no longer avail)---57.95 shipped, and with the 10.00 "credit i owe you it would be 47.95 shipped.pm me if interested.i may have the very hard to find 4 speed shifter as well, but i think i sold it to "lightemup"awile back, ill check for you this week.

The pan bracket varied based on cable end housing sizes. Pontiac GP & Monte shared their 200-4R cable and thus, pan bracket. I don't know if the Olds shared with another model, but it's certainly worth looking into.

Thanks for the reply Steve.
You've pretty much confirmed my suspicions on most of my questions.
Apparently because I'm still looking for more parts, I haven't gone for enough walks for everything to follow me home yet. But I'm working on it...

Hey L.A.X, good to hear from you man!
No, I don't need the entire console. Just the wood grain insert for the top of it for the 4 speed shifter.

If I can get the shifter cable new up here and a bracket from the junkyard from any 'ol 200r4, I'll go that route. No offense, but it's WAY cheaper that way for us poor Canucks what with exchange, duty and whatnot.

I already have the console shift, so I don't need the grommet either.

It sounds like I DO need the 4 speed shifter tho, so I'd appreciate it you'd have a look to see you still have it or not. Would you consider selling just the bracket? We could apply my "credit" to that if you'd consider it. Just a thought...
Thanks!

Good info here, I never would have considered there were different cable end sizes.
If that's the case, I'll get the cable FIRST, then search for the matching pan bracket accordingly.
Thanks for the response!

Good score on the parts you have Donovan. The rest of the stuff that you need shouldn't be too hard to find. Good idea to check with Kevin (O.D.Showtime). If anyone in Canada can help you out, he can.
