Hey guys chill out please. I do not want to break up the frendship you guys have on this forum.

Anyway I am not going to stick with my 299-r4 for a long time. I am just sticking with it right now till I can get the funds to buy a new trans. I am looking at the 700r4 to buy, but I do not have over $1000 for it plus other parts needed. So for right now the 200-r4 will be what I will stick with.

Its an opinion on transmission, there's no right or wrong answer. Lets not take things so personal and make a piss contest out it.

84GP, Sounds like you need to invest in some tires and suspension upgrades. At least if you want her to be quicker and not just spin. We are into upgrades and makeing the cars better right? No ragging on your build just saying the 2.14s leave a lot on the table. Have you ever taken her down to ye ole test & tune to see how fast she actually is? I know the big Poncho has lots of low end torque but I will bet my longer stroke high velocity head 509ci Cadillac motor makes more torque even lower in the rpm range.

Suspension wise to get her to hook A LOT better on the street I added aftermarket lower control arms to hold the rear flat & square with no bind. Double adustable uppers to improve GMs pinion angle ie shove the tires into pavemet instead of lifting the arse of the car unloading the tires. An air bag in the passenger side rear to pre load the suspension so that she puts the same pressure on both tires. A good posi. widened factory 442 wheels to 15x8s so that I could run much larger stickier 275/60 drag radials. Up front 70/30 drag shocks to keep a good ride but allow for more weight transfer. I can still boil the hides if I want but my car won't do what your car does only because I don't want it to. Again no flame or doging of your setup only explaining. I have embarassed big mouths on the street that had better power to weight than me only because of better traction and maybe superior gearing. Hot rodding cars is fun and challenging as it seems the more you know the more their is to know. Throw into that sometimes you have to compensate for someone elses superior budget. I like helping fellow gbody guys with real driveable street cars go fast. Anybody can make a light drag car go especially when it don't matter if you have to fix it, drag it home on the trailer, get good mileage etc etc. Cheers my friend. BTW how old are you? I bought my GN new in 86 and started doing minor improvements in 1988.

Hey Vern...thanks for the constructive criticism it sound like you know your stuff, no offense taken. I think that i actually have 2.73's in the rear, i did a little research a few years back, i got it at a junk yard out of a 85 cutlass, it's a 7.5 posi. I don't have a problem with launching really, it all depends on how i lay into the pedal. And i will be submitting a video soon. To answer your question i am 43,, that's not old really, but i am on my 4th Gbody and i've had several Abodies also with many different engines and transmission and rear end combos. You are right about the 3.08's.,....those gears would be perfect for my combo!! Like i've said before i've broken 2 rear ends and this is my 3rd, but the other 2 had real highway gears. The original one had the aluminum brake drums so that was the dreaded 2.14. Maybe next season i will change to 3.08's and i will post it.

Cool cool. 2.73s are a hugh improvement over 2.14s! As far as breaking rears the higher numerically the easier it should be on the rear at launch as its easier to get the mass moveing. www.taperformance.com make a support cover for your rear pictured on their website that will keep you from breaking it especially if you have the 28 spline axels in your 7.5. Like what come in the S-10s. (probably not) Well at least it will stop the breakage until traction and power start to get really serious. I am also 43. My only A body was a 71 GS 455 Stage 1 that I sold to a friend to restore. (with a stout th400 btw haha) I have a third 8.5 rear but I am not ready to part with it yet.

84gp, a truce isn't necessary, i'm not fighting you, that was never my intention. i think my style of writing comes off a bit short, i just don't like typing so... how about a virtual handshake? too bad i can't buy you a beer over the internet. 😀
a note on the t/a covers. there was a thread on pro-touring about them, one of the members there is a drivetrain guru and said that the bearing support they give is very minimal, and that due to things like the different materials and tolerance stack-up they can actually vary the preload on the bearings, which will obviously cause issues. he did say that they're useful on the 7.5 rears, but not on the good GM rears.
