I get 20mpg with my 301. It is not good at pushing a big fat *ss car but a light car like ours is perfect. I had a few Firebirds and they all had a 301- peppy and good on gas. The best thing you can do for a 301 is change rear end gears. That makes it easy on the little motor to show it's stuff. I have 3:23 gears and it loves that. Remember it has a 4" bore and a 3" stroke so it is very over-square and does not have the bottom end grunt that a long stroke motor has like a 350 or 400. But mine likes to rev and even though the intake is restrictive it hums along very nicely.
