How's it going. I have the original 305 in my car still and even though I have yet to drive it, I do know of the issues. One being that whenever cruising above 70 MPH, the temperature gauge rises. Now when I say rises I don't mean slightly. I mean rises to a level that you don't want to be at. I know this because the car was bought in place of me by my uncle who is a mechanic. He didn't fix it for whatever reason. My question is, what could the problem be. I'm worried of the obvious overheating possibility.

If this is the only time it runs hot make sure the plastic air deflector is on the car mounted to the bottom of the core support.

When I have had this problem, the thermostat was getting 'stuck open' so I had to change it and while doing that I also re-did the gasket. If the gasket goes bad the thermostat could read the wrong temperature. Don't buy the thermostat from autozone, I have had problems with their cheaper parts not working for me. Another weird problem I found one time, the radiator cap was wore out and after using the car a long time it would sort of 'pop up' and let a lot of pressure out of the radiator. That's probably not your issue but it's not even $5 to eliminate the possibility entirely by just grabbing a new radiator cap.

As of now, it's looking like the temp gauge doesn't even work anymore.

I think my entire cluster is failing as of now. The tach sits at 0 as does the temp gauge. The battery meter fluctuates too frequently. However oil pressure seems to work and stay steady.

I would put a decent aftermarket gauge set up under the dash for the time being so you would know the actual temperature of your engine and personally I would say buy the trio with oil pressure and volts and hook those up also, I have never been a fan of stock gauges lack of accuracy.

^x2 if you live near a PartsPlus+++ they have a really cheap under-dash replacement cluster for like $30-40

Open the hood with the car idling and rev the engine by hand while you look at the radiator hoses..

I've have lots of experience with overheating. And people have given good advice. But to be sure, just check that the hoses (most likely the lower one) dont collapse when uou rev it.

I'be seen it several times. One time the symptoms were exactly like yours.

The lower hose should have a spring inside to prevent this. Try pressibg the hose with your hands to verify if this is the case or not.,

If you are running a clutch fan , check to make sure it is not "freewheeling" when the temperature is up.
While the car is hot, turn the engine off and attempt to spin the fan. Little or no resistance could be the clutch unit has failed.

x2...you might end up with having no problems
