307 with Glasspacks?

My 86 cutlass had a stock 307 with stock single exhaust and a cherrybomb to replace the OEM muffler and it had a nice rumble at idle and rev. Sounded good at low cruising rpms too.

My 442 with a worked over 307 has the factory duals with no cat and turbos and doesnt sound all that bad either, has a nice little burble at idle like an oldsmobile engine should have. Both cars arent exactly loud but the I can hear the 442 idling out front of my house from second floor.

If I were you, I'd shell out the money and get a walker exhaust kit that they have for the 442's, either way custom bent or Walker OEM its going to cost about the same

My 77 chevelle had cherry bombs on it. Goin 70 - 80 on the interstate was bad *ss. the exhaust popped and cracked goin doin the road, and crackled when I let off the gas. It was great when I had it.

I thought you didn't want true duals? What are you wanting to do?

I would like to get true duals eventually. Still thinking, but this is a cheap little thing for now

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or money on a sub-par exhaust system if you're just planning on getting a better one later on. It's not worth it. Just get a nice dual exhaust system now and save yourself the inevitable 'kicking of your own a$$' you'll end up doing if you waste your money on a sub-par temporary exhaust system now.

I assure you that if you go with the good exhaust system right now, there will never be a time where you'll be saying to yourself 'gee, I really wish I had that crappy exhaust system I was thinking about getting before instead of this cool one I currently have'.

Hers the walker part numbers for the cat back 442 style system. I couldn't be happier

44294. Y/ intermediate pipe- 70 bucks
45221 right tail pipe 35 bucks
45222 left tail 33 bucks

Muffler choice

Stock 442 22623 2 at 65 bucks

The summit I used that dimensionally work almost perfect were only 22 bucks each

So I did mine for just under 200 with clamps and all in the driveway on jack stands.

For now I'd just swap out mufflers and that's it. How much would true duals cost me? I need a modified transmission crossmember for clearance so I won't have to get custom bent pipes and then the exhaust system itself. The exhaust along with the rest of the car are stock right now.

They're right, get a good one now and dont waste the money on a crap one. I paid $25 for my glasspack and another $70 on the installation through a garage. That $95 can go towards a good system.

How much are true duals gonna cost me?

EDIT: G force transmission crossmember is $219 so that's a start, just not sure on the actual pipes and mufflers

Can I just pick what ever mufflers I want on em? and have the exhaust shop do the rest? Should the pipes be a certain diameter?

Although I think the people at Pypes are jerks and their customer service SUCKS, they make a complete header-back 2.5" dual exhaust system, mandrel bent, with X pipe , in stainless steel for our G-Bodys for about $400. That's very cheap for what it is. If you're running manifolds, they also sell downpipes for those BUT they will only work on the 'older style' exhaust manifolds and not the ones on your 307, so you'll need custom downpipes.

EDIT: G force transmission crossmember is $219 so that's a start,

You can have a muffler shop just notch your factory crossmember for alot cheaper and alot better fitment. They can also make you a block-off cap for the passenger side manifold for cheap too.

Unless you're lucky, you're not going to find a shop to bend you up a custom dual exhaust system because it's illegal to mod any of the exhaust ahead of the cat converter. If you are one of those lucky guys who have shops that will do that kind of work for you regardless of the laws, then they'll build you whatever you want with whatever mufflers you want ( as long as they'll fit ). Don't place too much emphasis on mufflers though. Most anything you get will sound nice.

And let me just say it again; do NOT waste a dime on a temporary lame exhaust system or you will be throwing your money away for nothing. You will regret it, so just don't do it. If you don't have the money for a good exhaust right now, then save up until you do.

So don't worry about the transmission crossmember because the shop can do it. The downpipes are the pipes the come right out of the headers? Where would I find them for my car? Ebay? Amazon? Now what do I do about the rest of the system, after the X pipe?
also correct me if I'm wrong on anything haha

In roughly less than 2 months I'll have the money to have a full exhaust system done, change the gears on my car and rebuilt the transmission for the new gears. and I'll have some left over for the next thing to do for the car. Just gonna suck it up now and do that stuff when I have the money
