So don't worry about the transmission crossmember because the shop can do it.

Correct. Make sure your local shop will do it though because some may not want to bother with that.

The downpipes are the pipes the come right out of the headers? Where would I find them for my car? Ebay? Amazon?

Downpipes are the pipes that come down from the exhaust manifolds. You need 2, 1 per manifold. If you're running long tube headers then you don't need downpipes. Pypes has downpipes for the older style Olds exhaust manifolds. No one makes Olds downpipes for your style manifolds. If you're going to be running your stock 307 manifolds, then you'll need custom made downpipes from an exhaust shop IF you can find one that'll even do that.

Now what do I do about the rest of the system, after the X pipe?

Nothing. If you buy the Pypes exhaust system ( you can buy these at Summit Racing and Jegs ), it has the entire system. Just install it. You'll get a better understanding of this if you go to Pypes website and look at the pics and such.

In roughly less than 2 months I'll have the money to have a full exhaust system done, change the gears on my car and rebuilt the transmission for the new gears. and I'll have some left over for the next thing to do for the car. Just gonna suck it up now and do that stuff when I have the money

Wise choice and you will not regret it.

I know you want to do a lot of the work yourself and that is awesome. I can tell you that when i did my exhaust system I went here

They knew what i wanted and have everything that you will need regarding a great system set up. Their products and work are top notch and the exhaust last me well over 6 years. that's only because i moved upstate and park on gravel now. That was one purchase i never regretted going with them

It seems like you want to do many things.. Don't waste good money on the small things like glass packs. Do the rear end then do the exhaust. you will be happy with both of those modifications until you really want more power then you either change the cam or the engine to a 350 olds.

Trust me.. I feel your desires and have went on every road you have wanted about your car. now im still waiting for my 350 olds to be done.

Also I would use these hangers if you were doing it on your own. they are great!

The brand of headers isn't going to make much of a difference as far as mating up to a header-back exhaust system. You will most likely be trimming the length of 2 of the pipes to get a good fit regardless of header brand.

As far as how good I think those Heddman's are....I personally wouldn't run any headers in my car that weren't of the highest quality, so for Olds, it's the American Racing headers or no headers at all for me. Why? Because mass produced headers ( Flowshit's, Heddmans, Hookers etc ) MAY be made so poorly as to make fitment a huge PITA if you can get them to fit at all. Of course you MAY get lucky and get a set that may actually fit OK. Either way, they will eventually rust out and/or leak at some point, sometimes sooner rather than later. That's not something I want to mess around with. I want to bolt up headers KNOWING they will fit, not leak, not rust out, not hit the ground, and not cook my starter. The AR headers are the only ones that'll do that for sure, but you pay more money for that quality. There's a reason why Flowcrap headers are only $150 or whatever thoses pieces of $hit go for.

If you're looking into getting headers of any brand, I suggest doing a search to see what those who have installed those headers think. You will find many conflicting stories from 'Brand X fit like a glove' to 'Brand X wouldn't fit at all'. That's called poor quality control.

Old 350 with glass packs.

Nothing sounds quite as awesome.

Putting glasspacks on your engine doesn't mean it's going to sound like anybody elses car with the same mufflers. Depunds on the engine. I couldn't tell from that vid what the exhaust sounded like with the tires lighting them up. It sounded like just about every other exhaust I've heard in a performance muscle car.

Yea don't waste good money on glasspacks. Do it once, do it right.

Exhaust w/headers: Hooker ceramic coated headers #3108, or MJ Proformance Stainless Headers. Dynomax Mufflers, Torque Tech Exh mandrel bendt 2.5" Tailpipes #GMG25210T $215

What i had on my 86 442
Exhaust w/manifolds: get the exhaust manifolds from 81-85 307, and Magnaflow Cat Converter #23427 $101, along with Hooker Cat Back system #16810HKR $376.

Wish I knew how to do any of the work I wanted to do on my car instead of paying for a shop to do it ahaha but I don't know how so that's the only option. The Bronx is a bit of a drive for me, but I go into Manhattan/Brooklyn a lot so it's not bad at all. How much did they charge you? I know it was long ago..

I got headers, dual exhausts flowmasters and tips. they took care of the cross member and had the car back the same day no more than $1000 for sure. I know i had them do some extra stuff. Or it could have been the headers that i chose were the better kind. I really do trust those guys enough to take my car all the way back there to do the job again if I needed
