If it was me I would bolt up the transmission and make sure the mount is correct. Do you have a known good crossmember for the transmission mount, or just the one that came with it?

The transmission is mounted to the original crossmember. However, with my current clearance problem, I will have to ditch the old one for a new one (a GFORCE for example) in order to route the muffler system. If it was me I would bolt up the transmission and make sure the mount is correct. I don't think the original crossmember is correct for the 700R4, when you get the correct one it may pull the motor back to the correct position. Maybe call GForce and see what they say, I got my crossmember from Lemon's headers and its a much nicer piece then the others out there, Dan is a great guy you could give him a call. The transmission is mounted to the original crossmember. Thanks! I will check out Lemon's! BTW, I offset the original crossmember to compensate for the length of the 700R4, using only one of the bolt holes on the passenger side. Not ideal...but it worked.I don't think the original crossmember is correct for the 700R4, when you get the correct one it may pull the motor back to the correct position. I've had header issues with headers when I first installed a Chevy ZZ350 in my 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Diesel (what a dog). My first set of headers were Hookers, and sure enough, true to it's name one of the pipes hooked over and passed through the fender-well, hideous. My turning circle became like a truck's, and my tires rubbed on the offending pipes. The Hedman Hedders (I guess their shorties?) solved the problem. I swapped the ZZ350 to a ZZ383, but kept the Hedders with no issues, except in the back of my mind, the Hedman's are 1 5/8"s primary tubes whereas the Hooker's were 1 3/4". If anyone out their can advise me who makes headers for a small block Chevy in a G-Body, that is 1 3/4" and runs under the car, NOT through the fender-well, I would really appreciate.I'm stuck at a crossroad with my swap!!
My 85 was originally a V6. When I bought it, it already had the 1st gen 350 and 700r4, but there were so many things halfa$$ed with the swap that prompted a complete do-over. The motor mounts were not made for a Gbody and poorly welded instead of bolted. Many other problems followed!!
Luckily, the compression test was good on all 8 cylinders, so after removing the AC/Heater box, the engine was painted along with the engine bay. Correct motor mounts were used and placed, and the engine and transmission were reinstalled. This is where a new set of problems occur.
The engine now sits about two inches further forward than before. The shorty headers now rub the frame. I like the additional room between the engine and firewall, but I have to resolve the header-clearance issue before moving forward. Plus, the headers no longer aline with the muffler piping.
I haven't measured the drive shaft, but I'm almost positive it will no longer fit. Sooo...I'm looking for solutions.
My first thought is to pull and reinstall the engine after moving the motor mounts back by an inch and a half or so. My second thought is to leave the engine as is and replace the shorty headers with long-tube headers, but I would still have the drivetrain issue.
Any suggestions for a wiser way ahead would be appreciated.
William: According to the VIN, she was originally a V6. As far as I know, my 700R4 is a swap and not original to my 85. That said, the 700R4 is mounted to the original crossmember, but it is offset (moved further back) using only one of the bolt holes. I did that in compensation for the increased length of the 700R4.You said the 700r4 transmission was mounted to the original crossmember. Unless the original V6 came with a 700R4, then the frame mounts are definitely in the wrong place on the front frame. If that is the case, then I'd recommend that you do it right and pull and reinstall the engine after moving the motor mounts back by an inch and a half or so. Also, make sure you have the correct Chevy mounts for your year car with the V8.
GM never offered the TH700R4 in any '78-'88 A/G, only the TH200 4R in later models. As for you mounts, there is only one spot for SBC mounts & yours are in the right place. Cant figure out why someone would reuse V6 frame side mounts in a SBC swap.As far as I know, my 700R4 is a swap and not original to my 85.
