Hello everybody..I'm new to the forum and the new owner of a 86 Monte Carlo SS..I planned on taking out the 305 and getting a 350 chevy performance long block from summit put the problem is they're only for pre 1986 cars..Is there anyway to make this fit in my 86 or could somebody point me in the direction of a 86 and up block..All help appreciated

In 1986, GM switched to a 1 piece rear main seal on the small block Chev engines. The flywheel/flexplate mounting flange on the back of the crankshaft is slightly different between the 2 styles, and requires a flywheel/flexplate that is specifically designed for the type/year of engine you're using. You also need to use the correct oil pan for the type/year of engine you're using as well. Other than that, I can't think of any other issues that would prevent you from using the long block from Summit. Hopefully, some other members can chime in with any other possible issues. Good luck with your swap.

the reason they say up to 86 is due to fed emissions regulations that apply to 86 & newer vehicles the pan and flywheel is easily found it will drop in dave

The better crate motors GM sells are 1 piece seal motors, the cheap ones are 2 piece. The 96-02 Vortec truck crate motor is a really good deal for a crate motor since it is a more advanced SBC. If I buy a crate motor I would get a 1 piece seal, roller cam motor.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that Summit is concerned with emission regulations, as it relates to the sale of their parts. They would probably point out that meeting emission regulations is the responsibility of the vehicle owner, and would depend on the laws in the area where the vehicle owner lives. I believe that the reason they pointed out in their parts listing that their long block is for pre-1986 applications, is to tell possible buyers that the long block is equipped with the 2 piece rear main seal.
