The buyer isn't too bright, many people would have thrown on new gaskets and not said anything about the missing part of the piston. And it's not like he can go pick up another 355 tomorrow.

The guy was pretty arrogant and I didn't think highly of him in the 2 hours I dealt with him. He did me a favor by backing out. 383's aren't cheap and I was almost giving one away.

Some people want a running driving engine, basically cause they don't know what they are doing - I would rather buy it apart and put it together myself so there aren't any surprises like you found.

I was selling it at a discount because it had a significant oil leak. I also told him I would put new gaskets wherever it was needed. I ended up buying a $60 gasket set and a $75 piston, out of MY pocket. Plus was doing all the wrenching. I was losing my *ss on this deal but I knew he was getting better than I originally sold him. I just returned his stuff to him and he was cold as hell, like I was bothering him. I opened the barn doors and stood back so he could unload it and handed him his deposit. He didn't say anything so I didn't either. Just got in the Tahoe and drove off. Someone is going to get a great engine.

Just make sure it’s not a 383 piston for a 400 rod application on a 5.7 rod and a 3.48 stroke crank
5.565 400 rod
1.560 pin Height
1.875 half of 3.75 stroke
9.0000 deck
5.7 350 rod
1.560 pin height
1.74 half stroke 3.48
9.0000 deck
It Can be done without ever knowing unless you measure the stroke

what do you think about leaving the heads off so a future buyer can inspect the internals and see that it's actually a 383 and not something else?it'd be a piece of mind for someone like me if i was buying a used engine that's for sure.

It will remain apart for 2 more weeks. I don't care to leave it open but not going to leave it apart forever. I got lots of pics.

Do Chevy plugs sit that far over to the side of the cylinder?
