I've not had to mess with LS engines too much but was able to snag a running but smoking 4.8 from a van dirt cheap early last year. Thinking it would be a decent winter project to possibly replace an LG4 305 in an 88 Monte Carlo. Guy I got the engine off of seems to think it was rings but as I cracked it open it looks more like valve seals to me. A lot of carbon on the pistons. Has about 270k miles. Bores look decent, no piston slop. Since I haven't really done much but general maintenance with them. Do any LS guys want to chime in on this. No ridge on the top of the bores. Pictures make surface rust from being open wore than it actually is. Do I just just clean, check and replace bearings as needed, then just hone, re-ring and slap in some new lifters, and valve seals while I'm in there or is this far worse than it looks?

Now SBC guys I've got some parts laying around for that i want to use to replace a 305 TBI in an 89 C1500. I've got an L05 350 laying here for a while I want to use. TBI is probably leaving and will end up being carbed or I've got a Fitech unit to go on. I have an L82 962 cam and lifters a buddy of mine gave me from a project he never got going. I've got a few head choices here the 193 swirl ports from said 350, a set of 882 heads and another set of heads I don't recall the number of right now that are smaller chamber 1.84/1.50 valve that most likely came off a 305. Not the healtiest of options but it is basically a cleanup of what I have laying around here done cheap. The 882 heads pistons will probably be needed to get compression back up. Thoughts?

Neither of these are going to be hot rod type engines. Nothing too crazy. Just more than the worn out 305's in both of these. Basic goals are a simple no frills, starts, runs, drives LS swap for the 4.8 and more torque from the truck along with the benefit of a bump in hp over stock from both.
