I'm in the process of building a 427 sbc, i have the short block complete and assembled. Dart shp block 4in stroke 4.125 bore forged callies crank with 6in h beam rods. Forged probe 20cc dish pistons, .005 in the hole total seal gap less rings. This is going to be a pump gas hydraulic roller 6000ish street engine. Anyone ever build on of these I'd like some input on what heads to use. I have my eye on the AFR race ready 220s. I realize there are many good choices and would like to do some homework before i buy any thing. Thanks

Your head choice depends on what you will use the car for, street only, street/strip, race only. You have to watch things like runner length/size, chamber size on a street car. To many guys kill a motor for street use by components that are meant for the higher RPM range. You need to be realistic, how many times will a street car hit 7,000 rpm's? Cam, intake, and head all need to be made to work together, that short block combo could be a killer street motor if done right. I only use Dart heads and Comp cams, so if I were you I would call Dart first get a head and intake picked, then call Comp and get a cam cut for the complete combo, I also try to talk people out of aluminum heads in a street car, they can create headaches... (ie plug fouling, head gasket issues) but that is JMO

I have the AFR 220 heads on my 406. Street driven at times. I see no issues with them on street and work very well at the track. Now that being said I had dart iron heads on it previously and car ran a little slower ET but still ran great.

I have AFR 195s on my 406 setup and love them. Good low end, and to me, doesn't seem to run out of breathe on the upper rpm band. My car is built for the street. Rolller cam, heads, and compression, all built for pump gas. Hasn't made it to the track yet, but am anxious. Never had any problems with aluminum heads fouling plugs(don't know how that is possible, unless a gasket went bad or too much/little fuel), and no problems with head gaskets(bolts or studs, I've used both). AFR gives gasket choices in its instructions, so its a no-brainer. I even had a pair of White's Performance, ProComp 200cc aluminum heads on my 350 and never had problems. Just didn't like the angle plugs(have to have the right set of headers for them). Definitely call manufacturers or call your machine shop for some advice. And be practical. Don't buy a set of heads and cam because the number sounds good because its a high number, buy something you will be impressed with and happy with in your application. Good luck with the build.

Good advice guys, I don,t wanna over do it or not put enough head on it either. I have a cam picked out and degreed in(should have stated that earlier) 236-242at.050 291-299adv 592-592lift on a 110lsa installed on a 106 Bullet Racing cam 1.6 compcams roller rockers. Morel 4602 roller lifters. Cam requires 140lbs on the seat with 400lbs over the nose. Cam should come in around 2800-3000 and peak around 6000-6200. Car is 90% street with some test an tune and gamblers racing. Car is set up and hooks as of now. 1.58 sixty foots with 11.7et at 113 with my pump gas hydraulic roller 195 afr headed 406.

Well i have a set of AFR 220 race ready #1065 heads on the way. I went through Whites performance and machine they we're cheaper than summit, jegs and competition products. They even set me up with the correct springs for my cam profile, Will do business with them again very knowledgeable and professional. They said for my application the 220 were right in line, and if I find myself wanting more in the future I have room to grow with the 220s. They said with 10to1 with my cam profile and the race ready 220s I could expect north of 560 hp. I can,t wait :D

Looking good. Should be a nice 10 second street car. My 406 with the same heads is knocking on that 10second et. Good luck with it.
