the 1st gear in a 700 r4 is a granny gear in my opinion. I think GM first intended the 700 r4 for truck applications and it came as an after thought to put them in cars.
Gear ratios fro 700r4:
First - 3.06:1
Second - 1.63:1
Third - 1.000:1
Fourth - 0.70:1
Reverse - 2.29:1

200r4:
First - 2.7405404:1
Second - 1.567567:1
Third - 1.00:1
Fourth - 0.673913:1
Reverse - 2.07:1

First thing I'd want is to hear the 427. After purchase have it Placed on a dyno. Get raw data first. Anyone could find M/T valve covers and a few performance trinkets laying around. Plus identify what it actually makes. 600 hp is pretty even number. Either it was precisely engineered for 600. Or the owner has estimated HP. Maybe it makes 375 maybe it makes 12000???? Or maybe 601.875 HP?? With out actual data going to be a rougher build. Make sure your buying what is said to be. Or I can sell you a Carroll Shelby 305 with 800 hp for $4000.00 lol throw in some magic beans. Best of luck.

I had a friend of mine looking at a G body Malibu that had the 305 with the 700 r4 in it. With the lack of power it felt like the 2nd gear was missing...haha

If your going to make any real prw and going to drive it hard STAY AWAY FROM 200r4 and 700r4 your wasting your money building them.No matter what you spend to put in them they will still be the weak link.It would be like building a 7.5 10 bolt lol

If there are guys who are running 8 second turbo Buicks and a few I know of are running 455 Buick Skylarks with 200r4s, they can be built to handle tons of power. BUT in stock trim, any 200r4 that WASN'T in a GN, Monte SS, or 442, is a lot weaker. They are really good transmissions, drop right in place of a 200metric or a th350. Really good gear ratios too.

My 700r4 holds up nicely to my car, makes great hp and torque....the low 1st gear gets the car outa the whole quick....then again it's built great too.

I'll take a built turbo 400 with a Gear Venders behind it.

Wow thanks for all the responses. As far as motor specs its 40 over and that's about all the digging I did on it so far. I was just wondering how the frame would handle that kind of power n torque. I have the 200r4 trans and a th400. By the sounds of the collective experience here if I purchase this motor I'm not going to have a street car anymore. I don't know a whole lot about the 427 but the price is what had me inquiring. I think I'm going to head in a different route with this Gbody. I'll keep an eye out for a less aggressive motor. Again thank you for the responses, I can already see this being a very useful tool.

How much can you get the 427 for??
