I would agree that both, 18K Is about as close to a "blank check" as you can get, at least for most of us, and that is a little excessive for that motor. I would argue that with that kind of budget, you could put the money towards a heavier duty drivetrain and tires, and shop around for engine builders. Besides you should always design a project from the rearend forwards. I learned that the hard way.
damb thats alot of$$$$ buy my car. its in the classifieds a few months ago. 87 cutty, built edelbrock headed 455, currie 9 inch rear ready to go. tons of extras. pics in my gallery. motor is fresh. 5k. still has all the a/c . just a thought. email me [email protected]
Thanks for all the replies guys. I've not signed anything yet for this project and will probably take some time to really think about it. To spend so much money on just drivetrain alone is starting to freek me a bit.
Would be nice to have entire car done, not just engine, etc.
Problem is,money isn't a problem.
anyways....thanks and I'm going to wait for a bit.
8.5 10bolts will probably hold up,they're strong rears. You could get one at g body parts,or maybe here for anywhere around $800-$1000.Yearone offers a moser 12 bolt setup (crate rearend) for a gbody and if your a ford guy, many different companies offer 9 inch g body crate rearends. The 9 inch rear from summit offers 31 spline which would be strong and offers different ratios for gears.hope this helps
12k for a 475 horse 455??? That's crazy. I've only got $2500 in my 425 and she's pushin around 460hp, and then I have $0 in my trans (switch pitch 400)....
As far as a rear end... I'd go with a 9 Inch (I think they are a hell of alot stronger than GM rears, no C-Clips!) Currie, Moser, and Strange all make bolt in kits.... I bought a 9 inch from Currie set up for my '94 Chevy Pick Up, but now the trucks gone, so I'm tradin' it in on one for my Cutlass...
While your back there I'd upgrade the brakes, and if you haven't all the control arms and sway bars and such too...
They have a nice selection on crates. I might go for that one next year.
And like someone else said, "build from the rear forward". Get a 12 bolt with good gears. 3.73s or 4.11s if you're not gonna be doing any highway trips (or just a few short ones).
If you shop right, you should be able to build a nice car for 18k. But take you time. Look around in the for sale section here, good deals sometimes. If you plan to upgrade your suspension, buy a kit rather than piece by piece and you will save a bunch.
I figure you should be able to do your suspension, rear, transmission, and a crate for that kind of money.
Great tips guys!!
I am very impressed with a site that does not 'trash' a newbie who comes aboard asking what may seem to you as common questions, but to me...I'm just starting out. Be proud of yourselves. As some probably know, replies to my initial posts on other sites would have been anything from "hey Troll" to " you stupid or what?"
Thanks to all,and now I have a more realistic base from which to begin!! 😀
I wouldnt know from first hand, but have heard about that,G-bodyforum is quite notably a great, friendly site to find information about your g body or hell, even contemplate about off topic stuff too. You'll find this forum to be a keeper!
