Sorry if you already mentioned it...but what trans are you using in this car? You mentioned 4 gears

A rebuilt TH2004R with a shift kit.

I run a performer with a 3" filter. I cut a hole in the hood and used a cheap Lauren Hurst Olds replica scoop. I cut the back out so that it would be functional. I also added a donut to the bottom of the breather base so that I could mount foam in order to seal out hot underhood head so that the air breather only get fresh outside air. Their are pix in the photo album.

I run a 455 in an 84 with a torker intake and a 2 inch filter and it clears the factory hood.

My 455 with Edelbrock performer fits with plenty of hood clearance. There are several different holes in the frame for the motor mounts to accommodate the many different engine combos that the Gbody has. I actually had my motor in for a few years before i realized that i could move the motor mounts in a set of different holes further back and lower in the frame which brought my motor back further and down a little lower.

ok, I know this is a stupid question, but do you think that trans will hold up to the power the 455 puts out?

I have a TH400 behind my 455 and I'm dying to get an overdrive. I took it out on a road trip last Friday and spent $100 in gas.

Other than an overdrive my only other option is to swap out the rear end gears.

Do you have an idea what kind of power your 455 is putting out?

Also, are you going to be hitting up the Hurst Olds/All Olds day in Illinois this weekend? I'll be there with my car

This is just my opinion, stock they will not hold up very long. If you put some money into it, it will probably be a good trans. I think it also depends on what you are using the car for that will determine the life span of it. If it were me, I would go with one of these, http://www.2004r.com/trans/level3.shtml . It might be over kill, but I would feel much safer with it behind a 455. These engines have no problem making that amount of torque, so I think the trans would last a long time behind the 455.

First on my previous post I forgot to mention that I have a 1" spacer between the Performer and the carb. If I take it out or use a 2 1/8" filter I could shut a flat hood with the center hood braceing cut out. My point was to show an inexpensive way to make more room while additionaly making a functional cold air hood .

The transmission dan2286 linked is a comprable build to the 200-4r I run in my Cutty behind a 509ci Cad that makes a lot of torque down low. With a good posi lower control arms air bag and 275/60/15 drag radials it lays a pair of black streaks on dry pavement even from a roll. I would break this trans without the billet drum/shaft. If you don't have the clams for this build you can make due with a healthy 200-4r out of a GN/Ttype/MCSS/442 by adding a good shift kit like the one CKPerformance sells. (Bought mine on sale from them for $100) and a large cheap transmission cooler. At least if you keep regular rubber on it and keep her off the track.

With the same gears you should make a 1/3 better mileage with the 200-4r & a working lock up converter over a th400. I got 17.0 mpg on a interstate trip. Without it I think I might have gotten 12 mpg plus the motor would have screamed a lot more if I had tried to hold the same speed. BTW I was following a buddy with a diesel truck & trailer running 70 to 75mph.

What rear end gear were you running to get the 17mph with the 4 speed?

That link reminds me of the trans I came across yesterday. Someone has a Century Stage 3 trans that's supposedly good for up to 800 hp for sale on this board. I was doing a little research and came across Century's website.

Their stage 1 is here:
http://centurytransmission.com/cart/ind ... ucts_id=14

I don't have the money now or I would have jumped on that Stage 3 trans up for sale. The link you posted dan only says it's good up to 450 hp (well it says over 450).

The Century stage 1 says it's god for 500 rear wheel horse. That's pretty good I guess. I don't know much about transmissions or all the specs, so I can't tell if the Century one I linked is better than the one you linked.

Meaning they want to sell you level 3 if you have over 450HP/450TQ. It really about torque, weight, and well traction, not HP but most consumers only really have a handle on HP as a frame of reference. The drum/shaft is what fails in a drag car or heavy car with torque. So once you have replaced that its mostly just a matter of keeping it cool.

I had 3.42s with 28" tires when I got the 17.0 mpg. Tached 2,400 to 2,600 most of that trip which happens to be where my cam/motor makes the most vacume.
