455 OLDS BUILD QUESTION

Thanks for the info! just sent an email to SMI giving them my engine specs to see what they thought would be best! I had looked that them several times and also looked at the Jet Performance carbs, but they are all foreign to me lol. I had and 87 cutlass 307 in high school and always had issues with the computer controlled quad and put a Edelbrock on it till I got rid of the car (which i'm kicking myself in the *ss for) after that everything I've owned has been fuel injected outside of a ranger with a 302 that had a holley on it.
The computer quads can be difficult to diagnose and fix. It's one thing that it's computer controlled, it's even worse that it's OBD1. They can be meddled with and can tolerate some cam and timing adjustments, but it's not worth the hassle. Whoever you decide to go with, tell em what trans you'll be using so it has the necessary hookups for a TV or kickdown cable.

Expect about $2000 in parts alone for a proper 2004R build.

Can we back all of this up for a minute? You mentioned Speed Pro/TRW pistons. Do you have the correct piston to bore clearance? This is a common problem as the manufacturer recommends .025 where it actually needs to be. 040 (or something like that- my decimals may be off). It needs to be more than the recommended clearance.

Good point.Have seen this happen before and it causes so much internal heat to build up the engine runs hot on warm days.Do some research and save yourself some trouble.
.

The Speedpro pistons need .004" minimum clearance. They are a very heavy piston with old school 5/64" rings, neither good, especially the weight over stock rods. With a 455, that has many more bottom end issues than the Olds 350, light modern pistons and aftermarket rods are two good investments. Your motor will survive with proper machining and keep the rpm's reasonable.

I honestly don't know, when it comes to engine and transmission internals I send them out to well known great builders. The guy that's doing my engine has been building engines for 50 years and has done some big hp Olds builds so i'm trusting him to do it. It's just going to be a good street car, no strip or racing.

Yeah, but the point is that if your builder rolled the instructions that came with the pistons, you're not going to have a good time. Olds engines have a few items that need to be addressed during the build. Try to build it like a Chevy, and disaster is imminent.
