455 OLDS BUILD QUESTION

OP;

Did you pick that camshaft? And is it finalized (as in, bought and installed)? Just curious.

Someone mentioned "the brakes will be fine". I question what you are basing that on? I would disagree. I would describe them as being close to the edge, but definitely workable.

I have a single pattern 245*@ 0.050" in a 512 cubic inch motor thats street driven, and makes about 14 in-Hg of vacuum at idle (1100rpm). The brakes work on the street, but they are NOT the same as a stock 350sbc for example. You have one solid pump at all times, like you would normally. But if you ride them too long, or pump them too often with low revs, the vacuum does run out. Examples of this situation would be stop and go traffic, 3 point turns, parallel parking, etc...

Anyone thats used a big cam before knows what i'm talking about. If you arent used to this, and dont adjust your driving style accordingly, your front bumper will get real friendly with stationary objects.

There are a few ways around this. When you get the car finished, just take it into a big empty parking lot, and try some low speed driving, and try to make the vacuum run out, so you understand how it behaves. Next you can try to keep the revs up if you are in a situation like this. Manual trans, or braking in gear with an auto usually does the trick.

This post isnt meant to scare you, or tell you that that cam isnt streetable. I would just hesitate to tell someone that its "fine" for street driving, without explaining everything i did above.
