455 overkill for daily driver?

A 455 would be fine, as long as you don't mind paying for the gas that is.

My 455 isn't stock, but gets around 8-12 mpg around town.

An Olds 455 would be a really simple swap from your 307.
Be prepared to open your wallet and get bent over shelling out money if you put a turbo V6 in there...

If your concerned about MPGs, you might want to look into having a TH2004R transmission built for it. I've heard they can be built to handle 800+ h.p. And it still gives you overdrive and that will help with fuel economy at highway speeds, and not to mention, it will get ride of those high RPMs when cruising down the highway making it much more pleasant to drive. Personally, I will never put a transmission in a daily driver w/o overdrive again.

Once I get myself ahold of a 455, I'm gonna look into what it will take to make a 4L80 transmission work. (4-speed TH400  ) Maybe it won't, but it can't hurt to try.

I would highly recommend an overdrive transmission with a 455. I have an Olds 455 with ~3.55 rear gears with a TH400 and I only get 8 mpg. I have saved every gas receipt just to keep track of gas mileage. I would have actually saved money by buying an OD trans, rather than continuing to drive my car like it is. I spent $1200 in gas money driving only 5 months last year alone, and that wasn't daily driving....

Wow my 305 must be hurtin'. I go spend $300+ a month for gas on my car.

Well, it's not only "what" you drive, but "how" you drive it

If you drive with the throttle to the floor, your MPGs are gonna be killer, but if you drive like grandma, you could get better MPGs than Gerold Brovloski's Hybrid

ok thanks i am definetly gonna go for the 455 at the end of summer, so what gears should i run in the rear to give me some decent highway driving as well, also ints gonna be coupled to the th350 would that need replacing as well? im not really worried about front springs or shocks im gonna get some heavy duty shocks when i do my brakes as well as cross drilled rotors for the front.

You're gonna want new springs in the front after you drop that motor in. My front end was almost touching the ground with the original V6 springs and shocks still in. I'd recommend a 200-R4 or 700-R4 for a daily driver too. I've gotta a Turbo 350 behind mine for now. It's holding up good to all the burnouts that I've subjected it to thus far.

455s or big blocks in general in a g-body are great fun. I agree if you don't have the coin for an overdrive and actually want to drive her up on highway once and a while then get the 3.08 or 3.23 gears. I managed to get 17.0 mpg with 509ci Cadillac powered g-body on a road trip but in my favor I had the .67 overdrive makeing my final drive ratio 2.29 plus I had 28" tires. Also I had the lock up converter working which saves a good 200 rpms of slip and is generally considered to be good for a solid 1 mpg. Also she was not cammed to death and I had a Q-jet both which helped mileage. You might check out www.extremeautomatics.com Lonnie has 200-4R for $1,395 that comes with a warranty is guaranteed to 10.90s. He built the 200-4R than I ran behind the 509.

this has been helpful thanks guys ..... i am in the project stage im building a 455 buick motor out of a 1970 buick electra an dropping it in my 81 regal with a 200r4 transmission an 3:73 posi rear end ....im going with 2146 elderbock intake 130.cc dishtop pistons with a highperformance cam with valve springs that match the cam .....oh an the original big port heads...anyone estimate hp ?

For about a year my Regal was my daily driver, till I got my 95 Ford Escort.

A 82 Buick Regal with a Buick 455, and 2004R with a 8.5 with 3:42 gears.

Did well and ok.... but lacked some decent tuning, manged the best ( at the time) of about 16mpg HWY, now with the tunning done, I manage (with 3 adults and trunk full of luggage) 20mpg.

I don't drive it daily now, it's heater delete.. but still did take it on 2 6hr trips with no hicups. ran fine with the Qjet.

what do you regard as 'big port' heads? Generally the '67 to early '68 430 heads are regarded as big port heads. I don't have a casting number handy hear but could look one up if you need. As far as big valve stage one heads go these are high performance in their own right but the ports aren't as tall as the 430 heads.

You don't list a compression ratio but with a 9 or 10 to one or so for street use I would say up wards of 350-375 or so with a small valve unported heads as long as you are using a decent, degreed in cam.
