5.7 vortec installed in an 81 Monte Carlo

I know the mounts are the same, but for some reason, with the 327 sitting in there, the shift cable doesn't quite mount up right, as if the entire assy is sitting about 1/2" further foward... maybe long ago I put the clamshells on the wrong sides and it's causing it do sit like that?

I plan on doing the same thing with an 81 el Camino.
What mounts did you use?
And did you end up using the 4l60e?
