It turns out that the posi unit I was going to use is a 7.5 Auburn. One of the side gears is cracked, and they appear to be like hen's teeth. I have new spiders for the open in the car. I always hear people trashing the Auburns, but in the 90s, they were the cat's *ss with the Mustang boys. Are they that bad? I'm certainly not dropping $600 on a new one.

Worked great in Natasha's Camaro with 4.10s... so yeah, go with it.

I can't find parts. You got a good source?
Yet, another wrinkle..... I had a right 3.42 gearset, and sent it back on the premise that I was going to use the Auburn which needs a thick gear. So, I pop the diff cover to find that the open carrier needs a thin. FML

A ring gear spacer may be the way to go. I think Auburn's are throw away once broken

The part about not being rebuildable was the only downside to the auburn that I ever heard of.

I believe you won't find a source for parts because they are not rebuildable. That is the downside to them and the reason to never buy a new one. Considering you can buy a Yukon that is rebuildable in the $300-400 range it makes no sense to buy a new one and really makes NO sense to buy a used one IMHO.

I put an Auburn in my '89 5.0 back in the early 90's. Ran 3.55 gears so I had 255/60's in back to keep the highway RPM's down. Then I got a flat. In the middle of nowhere. 255/60's don't fit in front so I had match the tiny space saver with the 255/60. So much for the auburn.

If you plan on taking long trips, and have tall tires in back, have a spare tire that is the same diameter as you rear tires (and make sure it fits in front, too) or you will smoke your Auburn.

'89??? That's almost 3 decades ago and the last century. How old are you?
