They're both good in their later years, but that doesn't matter much if you plan on a heavy-duty rebuild.

From everything I've heard, the 700-R4 is a tougher transmission stock, but the 2004R has better spaced gears.

The 700-R4 has a much lower first gear, which reflects GM's plan of putting it in trucks and big vehicles.

Also a good thing to look at is ease of installation. What engine/vehicle/rear end are you looking at putting this in?

if you want a barely streetable car then there wouldnt really be a need for an overdrive transmission. but, if those are your choices, i would say go with the 700.they are stronger stock form and i personally just like them better

for the engine you're building and the usage i'd probably go with a highly modified and strengthened th350, maybe a th400.
700 vs 200
the 700 is slightly stronger stock but they actually had more issues when they first came out. 3.06 first gear and a large drop to 2nd. lesser overdrive.
the 200 can be built to handle insane power. first gear is slightly lower than the 700 but it's a lesser drop to 2nd--keeps you in the powerband. it also has a better overdrive.

They are both weak in stock form... the 700 has more room for more clutches... I prefer the th2004r...it has better gear spacing.

But as the man said, if you're looking for barely streetable strip car, the 350 is cheaper, tougher, simpler, and more reliable.

Its my understanding that the 700r4 is a turbo 400 with an overdrive.
The 200 4r is a turbo 350 with an overdrive.

Either can be built to handle monster horsepower. The advantage of the 200 4r is that it has a dual bolt pattern, chevy and BOP, and it is shorter.
